As a lifelong enthusiast of mystery novels and detective series, I must say that the adaptation of Georges Simenon’s “Maigret” is nothing short of exhilarating news. Having grown up on the cobbled streets of Paris, much like Maigret himself, the prospect of delving into this iconic character’s world feels like a dream come true.
Colin Callender’s production company, Playground Productions, is planning to transform Georges Simenon’s popular detective novel series “Maigret” into a TV show that will broadcast in the United States on PBS, under the prestigious “Masterpiece” label.
Production of the adaptation based on the character of the shrewd Parisian Detective Chief Inspector Jules Maigret, set in Budapest, has commenced. Calder and David Stern will serve as executive producers on this project from Playground.
Benjamin Wainwright, known for his roles in “Belgravia: The Next Chapter” and “Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim,” is set to portray Maigret, while Stefanie Martini, recognized from “The Gold,” “Last Kingdom,” and “Emerald City,” will take on the role of Madame Louise Maigret.
George Simenon’s character, Jules Maigret, stands as a stalwart in the hall of renowned literary detectives. We are deeply appreciative of Masterpiece, Banijay, ILP, and John Simenon for their faith and collaboration as we strive to introduce a modern-day Maigret to audiences across the globe. Patrick Harbinson’s innovative interpretation of this timeless intellectual property aligns perfectly with Playground’s goal of broadening our catalog of contemporary dramas that resonate on a global scale.
In this new adaptation, Blake Harrison, Reda Elazouar, Kerrie Hayes, Shaniqua Okwok, and Rob Kazinsky portray the dedicated investigators known as “Les Maigrets,” working alongside Nathalie Armin who takes on the role of Prosecutor Mathilde Kernavel.
The fictional character Chief Inspector Jules Maigret, created by Georges Simenon who was once a crime reporter, dwells in an authentic Paris rarely depicted on screen. This Paris ranges from the glamorous upper-class environments of extravagant hotels and mansions to everyday local bistros and bars, as well as secret hideouts frequented by criminals.
Patrick Harbinson’s interpretation portrays Maigret as a non-traditional, ambitious detective within the Police Judiciaire, eager to make his mark. He is tenacious in his probes, showing an extraordinary knack for understanding the minds of the crooks he pursues and boasting unparalleled expertise about Paris and its populace. Married to Madame Maigret and loyal to a fault, Maigret commands the prestigious police squad referred to as La Crim, tasked with tackling all grave crimes happening within and near Paris.
