As a seasoned movie enthusiast with a soft spot for biopics and a penchant for stories that delve deep into the human spirit, I can hardly contain my excitement about Shailene Woodley‘s upcoming Janis Joplin biopic! California has always been a breeding ground for artistic revolution, and it’s fitting that this film will bring the vibrant humanity of Janis Joplin to life on the very stages she once graced.
Actress Shailene Woodley is slated to headline a film about the life of Janis Joplin, and this project has been granted $2.5 million in financial assistance by the California Film Commission.
For many years, multiple attempts have been undertaken to portray the life of the rock star on screen, yet none have successfully materialized. However, Woodley is now taking charge by both acting and producing this film, which will be shot over a period of 30 days. The production is estimated to invest approximately $10 million in eligible expenses.
Janis Joplin found great significance in California – from the steps of San Francisco to the soundproof walls of Sunset Sound, the state served as the backdrop for her musical and personal explorations,” Woodley stated in a press release on Tuesday.
As a dedicated film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the commission has granted $12 million to bring “Suits L.A.” to our very own Los Angeles! You might remember that its spinoff series initially filmed its pilot in Vancouver, which boasts one of the world’s most generous film tax incentives. But now, it’s coming home to us Angelenos!
California successfully attracted the production of the show to Los Angeles by offering tax incentives worth $150 million from its scheme designed to encourage the building of additional soundstages. It’s expected that this project will create around 175 crew positions during its 96-day shooting schedule.
The NBC series “Quantum Leap” is the sole production, so far, to secure funding from the soundstage program that became law in 2021. This show, which ended after two seasons, was given a budget of $24 million as stated by the commission. Out of the initial $150 million allocation, $114 million remains unused.
Originally airing on USA Network for quite some time, “Suits” saw a significant boost in viewership after its 2023 appearance on Netflix and Peacock. Interestingly, the initial episodes were filmed in Toronto, serving as a stand-in for New York City.
Last year, over a hundred television series found their base in Vancouver, as indicated by data from Creative BC. Producers from Canada and abroad received approximately $450 million in tax incentives for shooting films in British Columbia during the same period.
I’ve been fortunate enough to be part of a group that recently announced the allocation of $39.6 million for 18 films in our latest funding round. Among these projects is a significant portion, $3.3 million, earmarked for “Community — The Movie,” the much-anticipated big-screen adaptation of the beloved TV series, which is set to premiere on Peacock.
Additionally, there’s a budget of $2.5 million earmarked for “Killing Gawker,” an independent movie produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s production house, which revolves around the courtroom fight between Hulk Hogan and the now-defunct website.
“Lullaby,” a Disney feature film, will get $3.5 million.
