Netflix’s New Blockbuster Action Movie Cut An Entire Plotline From The Script, Reveals Writer

Netflix’s latest action movie, Apex, quickly became popular, but the original plan for the story was quite different.

Apex is a thrilling survival drama on Netflix. Charlize Theron stars as Sasha, a troubled rock climber hunted in the wilderness by a serial killer named Ben, played by Taron Egerton. The film, directed by Baltasar Kormákur, forces Sasha to use all her skills to survive with very limited resources.

Jeremy Robbins, the writer of the thriller Apex, recently told The Hollywood Reporter that a whole storyline was cut from the film. Originally, the main character was going to get assistance from a park ranger, but the filmmakers decided to remove that element to create a more suspenseful and gripping experience.

He explained that cutting the character wasn’t simply about simplifying the story. The team aimed for a grittier, more realistic feel, forcing Sasha to save herself without any assistance. This made the story more focused and put her in a much more perilous situation.

Robbins explained that the changes weren’t limited to the plot and Sasha’s character arc. Initially, Sasha had typical climbing equipment, like special shoes suited for her surroundings. However, as the script developed, even these practical details were reevaluated. The team ultimately decided to strip away anything that would have made her struggle less, leaving her to face challenges with minimal resources. Both lead actors agreed with this approach.

Robbins explained that the team significantly improved the story by removing a storyline and restructuring how it unfolds. He said these changes created a more gripping experience, pushing the main character to their limits and keeping the audience thoroughly engaged.

Apex is now available to stream on Netflix.
