Super Mario Party Jamboree Offers Many More Ways To Fall Out With Your Friends

As someone who has been through countless hours of Mario Kart battles and Mario Party skirmishes with my friends, I can confidently say that Super Mario Party Jamboree is the ultimate testament to Nintendo’s commitment to fostering friendly rivalries and family feuds. This game is a rollercoaster ride of exhilaration and despair, laughter and tears, all thanks to a dice roll.

As a gamer, it’s amusing to ponder that despite their adorable looks and family-friendly vibe, the long-lasting multiplayer Mario series seem to be tailor-made to stir up rivalries among gaming buddies. From blue shells to King Boos, games like Mario Kart and Mario Party have been causing friction among players for decades – in 2018’s Super Mario Party, I remember my wife shouting, “I don’t love you!” after I managed to beat her at a flagpole minigame. Fortunately, we’re still an item.

The most malicious piece among them is the latest Star-Stealing Trap, an item which transforms a designated spot on the game board into a dangerous minefield, stripping a Star from any player who lands there by misfortune. In essence, Mario Party embodies this experience–a game that can be thrilling and heartless at the same instant, magnificent and crushing, all contingent upon the outcome of a die roll.

In Super Mario Party Jamboree, the primary feature is undeniably the classic Mario Party mode. Reminiscent of its debut on the N64 over two decades ago, it combines navigating a board game with engaging in minigames. This time, you’ll find seven unique boards to select from, two of which are familiar faces: Mario’s Rainbow Castle from the original Mario Party and Western Land from Mario Party 2.

In our demonstration, we engaged in approximately 30 minutes (or five rounds) of Mario Party mode on the freshly introduced Mega Wiggler’s Tree Party board, which features a forest theme. One possible route leads players over a massive snoozing Wiggler at its heart. Stepping onto an Event Space triggers a bell, causing Wiggler to briefly stir from his nap and roam around in circles, altering the layout of the board. Items including special dice, warp pipes, and some novel extras are back, along with a few new elements, but it essentially retains the classic Mario Party experience that you’ve come to either appreciate or despise.

As a gamer, I’m stoked about the return of a dedicated mini-game mode, now christened as Minigame Bay to align with Jamboree’s island motif. In this corner, players can engage in diverse combinations of mini-game challenges and playlists, or simply unwind in Free Play mode where you can select your preferred favorites from the assortment of fresh and familiar mini-games on offer.

In Mario Party Superstars, a new feature called Daily Challenge mode has been brought back. This mode gathers three minigames into a playlist, each focusing on a specific theme. For example, we played Minigame Munchies, which includes three games centered around food, and Master Strategist, consisting of games that promote strategic thinking. By successfully completing these challenges, you accumulate Party Points or some form of in-game score, but it’s not yet clear from our preview what these points can be used for.

At the Jamboree, two fresh gameplay options have been incorporated – Koopathlon and Bowser Kaboom Squad. While you can engage in these modes against AI opponents, their design strongly emphasizes multiplayer interactions online. However, please note that only a single player can enjoy these modes on one console at a time.

In Koopathlon, 20 players engage in mini-games to accumulate coins, moving their characters across a shared board. The unique aspect is that the gameplay and board progression occur concurrently, displayed side by side on the screen. Although it may seem busy at first glance, the board essentially functions as a dynamic leaderboard, showcasing players’ coin-collecting abilities. It’s possible to largely ignore the board if desired. The game appears to blend elements of Fall Guys and Mario Party, but unlike Fall Guys, no one is eliminated, and competition primarily occurs indirectly between players.

Koopathlon’s mini-games are tailored to their unique mode and may appear less elaborate compared to the minigame variety found in Mario Party. The games we sampled included: collecting coins using cannons, leaping over sharp poles, and a fast-paced endless runner reminiscent of Temple Run. After playing three such mini-games, a grand Bowser-themed mini-game commences, featuring all 20 players. Winning this game rewards a valuable item while losing moves your position on the board backward. The mini-game we experienced involved dodging fireballs and, despite being brief, there was a certain excitement in observing all 20 characters simultaneously.

In the game known as Bowser Kaboom Squad, up to eight players collaborate to gather bombs, fill a cannon, and steer clear of an enormous Impostor Bowser resembling a kaiju. Once the cannon is loaded, it fires at Bowser, reducing his health bar. The players have five rounds, each lasting 90 seconds, to vanquish him. Every 90 seconds, a mini-game provides an opportunity for the team to acquire items that will aid them in their quest.

The gameplay style seems oddly incomplete and lackluster, offering a series of generic-looking maps and awkward, unexpected controls that are unusual for a Nintendo title. It’s challenging to envision Bowser Kaboom Squad captivating players for extended periods compared to the other game modes.

While it’s commendable that Nintendo consistently introduces new modes to the Mario Party series, it can be puzzling as to why multiplayer-per-console options such as Koopathlon and Bowser Kaboom Squad are included in a Mario Party game. The essence of Super Mario Party Jamboree seems to lie in the camaraderie and friendly competition with your friends, ideally while you’re all gathered in the same room, rather than playing solo on separate consoles.

From this sneak peek, it appears that Super Mario Party Jamboree may not win over any doubters regarding the franchise. Yet, with an appropriate group of friends or family, it promises fun reminiscent of classic Mario Party sessions. With seven boards, 20 characters, and more than 110 minigames, this could be the most value-packed Mario Party experience on the Switch so far.

Super Mario Party Jamboree launches for Nintendo Switch on October 17.
