Gillian Anderson Finds Strength When She Loses Everything in Toronto Drama ’The Salt Path’

As I delve deeper into the captivating world of Gillian Anderson, I find myself continually amazed by her transformative performances and the depth she brings to each role. In “The Salt Path,” she strips away the trappings of period costumes and glamour, trading them for a pair of hiking boots and a heart-wrenching journey.

In recent times, Gillian Anderson has assumed several roles to depict real-life prominent women such as Eleanor Roosevelt (first lady), Margaret Thatcher (former British prime minister), Johanna Elisabeth (German princess consort), and Emily Maitlis (BBC journalist). Her upcoming project, “The Salt Path,” adapted from Raynor Winn’s autobiographical book with the same title, is another true tale about a tenacious woman confronting a life-changing obstacle. However, instead of wearing period costumes in this production, Anderson dons a pair of hiking boots.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I recently discovered “The Salt Path,” which will be showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival. This heart-wrenching tale follows Ray (Anderson) and Moth Winn (Jason Isaacs), a devoted couple who are compelled to embark on a 630-mile journey along the breathtaking yet challenging coastline of southwest England, after being evicted from their family farm. To add fuel to their already burning hardships, Moth was diagnosed with a progressive illness just that week, a condition that would eventually take away his ability to walk and balance, cause dementia, render him unable to eat, and ultimately end his life. With only the bare necessities for survival on our backs, we set out on this arduous trek, finding our bond deepening with each passing step; a testament to the adage “it’s about the journey, not the destination.

Anderson shared with EbMaster, “For weeks after reading the book, I found myself constantly thinking about it. It shifted my perspective regarding homeless people and those living on the streets. It made me realize how easily any of us could end up in such a situation, and it stirred deep empathy within me because I see this issue as a widespread problem that demands attention and solutions for those experiencing it.

As I stood on set, filming Ray’s journey with Winn, I couldn’t help but feel the profound impact of Anderson’s words. “I was becoming increasingly cognizant of the profound transformation unfolding within me during this filming process,” I reflect. “Being enveloped by nature in all its forms, delving into the thoughts of a character who had experienced such traumatic events, and attempting to make sense of it all.

As a film enthusiast, I found myself deeply moved by the character’s transformation. The lesson they learned was quite profound: “We tend to think that wealth equates to freedom, but what they eventually grasped was that true liberation lies in having nothing, no plan, and no ties.

In certain scenes where words are absent, Anderson’s character Ray powerfully expresses emotions without uttering a sound. Her ability to convey is remarkable, allowing viewers to delve into her thoughts and experience her struggles, including trauma, fear, and the pursuit of hope. She explains, “I appreciate your observation.” She feels that Ray’s journey was primarily about dealing with anger, resentment, trying to understand how she and those around her ended up in such a dire situation, and finding a way to accept what was happening to them rather than constantly fighting against it. Instead of perpetually cursing the circumstances, she seeks to embrace reality.

By the close of the day, Anderson aspires that viewers of “The Salt Path” will carry away an impression: humans are remarkably resilient. We may believe we’ll succumb to various hardships such as losing loved ones, experiencing tragedies, job losses, or relationship breakdowns. Yet, consider this couple who, in reality, faced the loss of everything. Step by step, they persevered and eventually emerged stronger on the other side, demonstrating fortitude, deepened love, a strengthened sense of self, and faith in their ability to overcome any adversity.
