PS5 Controllers Are Now More Expensive

As a long-time gamer with deep pockets and even deeper love for Sony’s gaming ecosystem, I can’t help but feel a tinge of frustration at this latest DualSense price hike. I remember when I first got my PS5, I felt like I was getting a steal with those affordable controllers. Now, they’re starting to feel like a luxury item.

Sony has increased the prices of its PS5 DualSense controllers once more, this time bumping up the cost of standard controllers by $5. Starting now, the black and white standard edition of the DualSense controller will retail at $75 (previously $70), while all other models have risen from $75 to $80. However, the price for the DualSense Edge remains unchanged at $200.

It appears that Sony hasn’t officially acknowledged a price increase on their DualSense controller, yet it seems to have taken place recently. Twitter user Wario64 was one of the first to notice this rise in price, which is now visible at Sony’s PlayStation Direct store and retailers like Best Buy. As always, there are bargains to be found; Antonline via Amazon still offers the standard black and white controllers for $70, although it’s uncertain how long these prices will persist.

A rise in the cost of DualSense controllers was observed shortly after Sony increased the price of PS5 consoles in various regions globally, excluding the United States.

In the initial quarter of fiscal year 2024, from April 1 to June 30, Sony reported a 27% decrease in PS5 hardware sales compared to the same period last year. However, the total number of PS5 consoles sold has exceeded 60 million units. Typically, console prices reduce over time as production costs decrease. But due to the pandemic and additional factors, this trend isn’t observed with the PS5. The price of the PS5 has risen in Japan and other regions, but not in the United States. Sony attributes these price increases to global economic conditions.

In this round, it’s just Microsoft that has increased prices for Xbox and Game Pass, making Nintendo the sole one among the major console producers who has maintained prices consistently throughout this generation.

Moving forward, there’s speculation about an upcoming PS5 Pro model, which might debut this year at a price point of $600 or higher. If the rumors hold true, we can anticipate its launch sometime in October or November.
