As a film enthusiast who has witnessed the transformation of Indian cinema over the past few decades, I am absolutely thrilled about Spirit Media’s acquisition of the distribution rights for Payal Kapadia’s masterpiece “All We Imagine as Light.” Having had the privilege to watch numerous films from diverse backgrounds and cultures, I can confidently say that this film stands out as a beacon of urban connection and sisterhood.
The production company, Spirit Media, established by the renowned actor Rana Daggubati from “Baahubali,” has secured the Indian distribution privileges for Payal Kapadia’s award-winning film titled “All We Imagine as Light” at Cannes.
In her first directorial venture, Kapadia pens and helms the movie, weaving a tale about two women in Mumbai: Prabha, a distressed nurse who unexpectedly receives a gift from her absent spouse, and Anu, her young roommate yearning for privacy with her boyfriend. A journey to a coastal town offers them the opportunity to fulfill their secret desires. The cast includes Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, and Hridhu Haroon.
As a movie enthusiast, I find this movie deeply resonates with me, as it delves into the powerful bond of friendship between three unique women. Too often, we see women portrayed in conflict, but for me, friendship is a vital connection that fosters unity, acceptance, and compassion towards one another.
Earlier this year, the movie clinched the Grand Prix at Cannes. In her critique for EbMaster, Jessica Kiang described it as “a radiant depiction of urban bonding and sisterhood,” further stating, “Few films have ever so elegantly depicted the solitary charm of Mumbai during the night.
Following distribution agreements in the U.S. for its fall premiere, as well as France and numerous other significant regions, the film “All We Imagine as Light” is poised to be among the most widely theater-released independent Indian films ever, as it graces screens globally.
Films produced with support from Daggubati and Spirit Media, such as “Bommalata,” “C/o Kancharapalem,” “Charlie777,” and “35-Chinna Katha Kaadu,” are independent productions.
I was brought to life through the collective efforts of Thomas Hakim and Julian Graff, who are based in France and helmed their production company Petit Chaos. Alongside French production, this project also had the support of various international companies, including Chalk & Cheese Films and Another Birth from India, BALDR Film from the Netherlands, Les Films Fauves from Luxembourg, Pulpa Films from Italy, and Arte France Cinéma from France.
It’s likely that it will be a strong competitor for representing India in the International Feature Film category at the Oscars.
Following the warm reception at international film festivals, we’re excited to present ‘All We Imagine as Light’ by Payal to Indian audiences, as stated by Daggubati. This collaboration with such a remarkable film is part of our mission to share powerful and emotional narratives from various regions across the nation with viewers everywhere.
