As a dedicated fan, I’ve always admired Patti Scialfa, the remarkable woman who shares her life with Bruce Springsteen and is an integral part of his E Street Band. In a heartfelt disclosure, she recently shared that in 2018, she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma – a challenging form of blood cancer.
Scialfa opened up about her health challenges in the recent documentary “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band,” which debuted at the Toronto Film Festival on Sunday. In this film that offers an introspective glimpse into the life of the rock icon and his close-knit team, she admitted that her illness has impacted her ability to perform on stage. Consequently, she has decided to reduce her touring activities.
Since it impacts my immune system, I need to be mindful of my choices regarding activities and places,” she stated in the movie. “Occasionally, I attend a performance or two, perform a few songs on stage, and it’s delightful. This is my current situation, and I find it acceptable.
On Sunday, Scialfa chose not to be present at the premiere. Born in 1950, she has been a part of the E Street Band since 1984 and tied the knot with Springsteen in 1991. In 2014, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an E Street Band member. In her book “Road Diary,” she expresses that sharing the stage with her husband gives the audience a unique glimpse into their relationship.
In 2023, Springsteen also had to delay his tour following a diagnosis of peptic ulcer disease. Previously, he had to rearrange several performances due to “vocal problems,” as directed by his doctor.
As I sat down to watch “Road Diary,” I found myself immersed in the captivating footage from Bruce Springsteen’s recent world tour, offering a rare glimpse into the meticulous backstage preparations that go into crafting such spectacular performances.
