As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of cinema, I must say that “On Swift Horses” is a captivating and thought-provoking addition to the queer drama genre. The film’s portrayal of hidden desires in the 1950s, an era not typically known for its openness, is both daring and poignant.
Jacob Elordi and Daisy Edgar-Jones ignited a frosty September evening at the Toronto Film Festival during the debut of “On Swift Horses.” This intriguing drama delves into the clandestine longings of a gambler and his sister-in-law amidst the rigid societal norms of the 1950s, where giving in to such feelings could have disastrous consequences. The movie carries a strong sexual tension throughout, showcasing numerous intimate scenes between Elordi’s character, Julius, and Diego Calva, who portrays a seductive swindler that captivates the enigmatic loner. Edgar-Jones takes on the role of Muriel, the wife of Julius’ brother (Will Poulter), and becomes entangled in a passionate affair with Sandra, a free-spirited neighbor played by Sasha Calle.
During a question and answer session after the movie “On Swift Horses” was screened, its director, Daniel Minahan, shared that what attracted him to the story was the opportunity it presented for portraying “a fresh interpretation of the American dream, but this time from a queer perspective.
The movie is adapted from a novel by Shannon Pufahl, and Minahan appreciated the positive tone that the author brought to the narrative, which could have been gloomy and unendingly tragic in different hands. “She crafted a tale about individuals concealing themselves, observers, seekers trying to discover themselves, who eventually connect… The story doesn’t conclude tragically; instead, it offers a message of hope, which was significant to us throughout.
In my perspective as a movie enthusiast, the climax of this film remains undisclosed in this review to preserve the suspense. The journey is filled with intricate plots, humor that will make your sides ache from laughter, and encounters with unforgettable gangsters and con artists. There are also glimpses into the underground gay club scene and some thrilling urban horseback riding experiences. Enjoy the ride!
Fans outside the Princess of Wales Theatre erupted with screams upon Elordi’s arrival, as the theater was already full for the movie screening (staff had to remind fans not to take pictures of the star and continue entering the auditorium). However, against his growing fame from roles in “Saltburn” and “Euphoria,” Elordi still felt compelled to audition for the part of Julius. His portrayal of events differed slightly from that of the director.
“I had to audition for the film,” Elordi said.
“It wasn’t an audition,” Minahan insisted. “I love that you thought it was.”
“They made it feel like one,” Elordi said, with a chuckle.
Over time, the reserved Muriel begins to break free from her conventional existence, discovering an yearning for a life that’s thrilling and liberating. Initially, she satisfies this craving through clandestine visits to horse races where she places bets. Later, it evolves into passionate afternoons shared with Sandra. Edgar-Jones was moved by Muriel’s determination to follow her dreams, finding hope in her actions, and admiring the subtle acts of defiance she displayed.
Elordi expressed that portraying Julius provided him an opportunity to embody a cowboy figure. To develop this character, he drew inspiration from Kerouac and embodied a type of highway nomad, residing in seedy motels and donning leather jackets. “I experienced the greatest sense of American freedom I believe I’ll ever feel,” he noted.
In “On Swift Horses,” there’s an abundance of sexual scenes, yet it’s the poignant moment when the characters acknowledge that they’ve formed deeper emotional bonds with their hidden lovers, rather than just physical ones, that gives the film its strength.
Calle stated that the film primarily revolves around love. He emphasized the significance of experiencing this emotion, regardless of who it’s with or where it leads you. He added that it’s crucial to embrace these feelings and find comfort in them.
Calva also noted that the film explores the theme of identity. It’s about mustering the courage to discover, travel along, and persist on one’s unique journey. I believe this is something everyone can relate to.
