The Shining Compendium Box Set Is A Staggeringly Ambitious Examination Of Kubrick's Horror Classic

As a seasoned horror enthusiast who’s seen more ghosts than episodes of Ghost Adventures, I can confidently say that The Shining, both the Kubrick film and King’s novel, are must-haves for any aficionado of fear. While Stephen King may not have been a fan of Kubrick’s adaptation, I find it hard to disagree with the growing appreciation for the movie over the years.

45 years ago, Stanley Kubrick dramatically changed the horror movie landscape with his version of Stephen King’s The Shining. Soon, fans can immerse themselves in the lasting impact and controversial production history of this classic horror film through a two-volume set from prestigious art book publisher Taschen. Entitled Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, the compendium boasts over 1,400 pages filled with insights from renowned directors, exclusive behind-the-scenes information about the movie’s production, and much more. Expected to be released on November 26, you can preorder it now at Amazon for a $50 discount.

Here’s a closer look at this new version of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining compendium.

Taschen’s new compendium isn’t the first book about Kubrick from the publisher. For a broader look at the filmmaker’s storied career, The Stanley Kubrick Archives is essentially reading. Two hardcover versions of this incredible compendium are available. A compact, budget-friendly edition with 861 pages is discounted to $15 (was $25) at Amazon. The premium version of The Stanley Kubrick Archives is a wide coffee table-style book with 544 pages. It contains the same content, but the images and text are larger. You can buy the high-end edition of The Stanley Kubrick Archives for $58 (was $100) at Amazon.

Enthusiasts of the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey” might want to explore Taschen’s extensive 527-page book detailing the process behind Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke’s novel. Notably, last year, Taschen released a compilation of Kubrick’s photography called “Through a Different Lens.

The Shining Series Book and Blu-ray Deals

The Shining, released in 1980, is frequently hailed as one of the greatest and impactful horror films ever produced. Based on Stephen King’s novel, this chilling movie features Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance, a reformed alcoholic and aspiring author who accepts a winter caretaker position at an isolated mountain resort hotel. His wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and son Danny (Danny Lloyd) join him for the season, but their peaceful winter retreat soon transforms into a harrowing experience as Jack’s sanity deteriorates under the influence of mysterious forces within the hotel. Initially, critics had mixed opinions, but over time, The Shining has gained widespread acclaim and is now considered one of the genre’s cornerstones. Additionally, it holds an infamous reputation due to tales of a challenging–even oppressive–production process that have only added to the movie’s mystique.

If you haven’t seen The Shining before–or the Mike Flanagan-directed sequel, Doctor Sleep–you can grab both on 4K Blu-ray for cheap at Amazon. Kubrick’s film has many fans, but Stephen King isn’t one of them. The novelist rather famously hates the adaptation of his novel, which remains one of King’s best books today. His negative opinion of the movie likely contributed to his decision to write the 1997 miniseries that aired on ABC. Clocking in at roughly 4.5 hours across three feature-length episodes, the TV series received mixed reactions from critics and fans. In the years since, appreciation for Kubrick’s film has only grown, while the TV adaptation has largely been forgotten. But earlier this year, Shout Factory revived The Shining TV series with a Blu-ray release. If you love The Shining, it’s definitely worth a watch.

If you haven’t read King’s The Shining and Doctor Sleep novels, we’ve included a list of deals below on hardcover and paperback editions, as well as a box set containing both novels and three other great King books. The Shining, in particular, is a masterful work of horror fiction. King published Doctor Sleep in 2013, over 25 years after The Shining. It had the truly unenviable task of following up a beloved classic. Unsurprisingly, Doctor Sleep isn’t as good as the original, but it’s still a great book and a worthy sequel.

  • The Shining (4K Blu-ray) — $15 ($42)
  • Doctor Sleep: Director’s Cut (4K Blu-ray) — $13 ($25)
  • The Shining (1997 TV Series) — $24.49 ($35)
  • The Stanley Kubrick Archives (Hardcover) — $15 ($25)
