As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for international cinema and a soft spot for compelling female-driven narratives, I am genuinely thrilled by the announcement of “Queen of the Woods.” Clara Lago’s talent, combined with the visionary direction of Luján Loioco, promises an emotionally charged journey that resonates deeply. The story’s focus on a pregnant woman’s struggle to reconcile her past and embrace her future is not only intriguing but also timely, given our current cultural discourse surrounding women’s rights and empowerment.
In this role, I, Clara Lago, am set to take center stage alongside the tireless Alfredo Castro in the Iberseries Co-Production Forum-bound production, “Queen of the Woods” or “La reina del bosque.” Known for my roles in the hit romcom “Spanish Affair” and Andi Baiz’s suspense drama “The Hidden Face,” I am excited to embark on this new adventure.
Under Luján Loioco’s guidance, the production of this drama is a collaborative effort between Libre Cine, based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, non-stop Argentine-Spanish company Non Stop, Brazilian film company Cinefilm, and Bosco Entertainment, headquartered in the United States under Julio Bove’s management.
Titled “Queen of the Woods,” this film revolves around a suspenseful narrative about a woman and her ailing father, who are both expecting a child and isolated in a secluded mountain cabin. As they spend their final days together, she delves into her past, battling the specters of her childhood to uncover the kind of mother she aspires to be.
Loioco expressed, “My goal is to create a tale that resonates profoundly with viewers. In this movie, I intend to explore feelings that are intricately linked to the female perspective.”
“Her aim is to craft an atmosphere where it seems as if you’re dreaming, and she found that tension provides the key ingredients to stir up a compelling and unique feeling of disquiet,” she explained further.
The main filming stage is nearly complete, with plans to start shooting in June 2025, specifically in Spain and Patagonia, Argentina.
The project has previously been recognized with a Best Screenplay award at BioBioLab IV in Concepción, Chile (2022), where it also took part in the Bolivia Lab XIV and Chile’s Sanfic Lab XI. In the previous year, it underwent the Mercosur Co-Production Meet in Brazil, Sapcine VIII in Cali, Colombia, and the Extremadura Residency in Spain.
At Libre Cine, the dramas they create align with their production goals, focusing on characters who break conventions. They employ various genres to transform individual tales into relatable, broader narratives.
“Loioco expressed that they aim to create stories which can journey across boundaries and resonate globally, starring international talents and igniting curiosity in various locations,” Loioco, known for works such as “La niña de tacones amarillos,” “Algo con una mujer,” and the fiction series “La vida que viene” (co-directed with Mariano Turek of Libre Cine), stated.
“Loioco stated their objective is to create content that resonates globally, focusing particularly on gender aspects and Ibero-American production. Furthermore, they mentioned that their strategy revolves around collaborative production and international alliances, acting as a connecting link between Latin America and Europe.”
