Chinese Director Bi Gan’s Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Resurrection’ Boarded by Les Films du Losange (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must confess that the upcoming sci-fi detective movie “Resurrection” has piqued my interest. The director, Bi Gan, is no stranger to me, having left an indelible mark on the film industry with his masterpiece “Long Day’s Journey Into Night.” His unique storytelling and cinematographic style are akin to a symphony of visuals that resonate deeply within my soul.

A Paris-based business specializing in sales and distribution, Les Films du Losange, has taken on the project “Resurrection,” a science fiction detective movie helmed by Chinese director Bi Gan. Notably, Bi Gan is recognized for his 2018 film “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” which was screened at Cannes.

Under the lead of Chinese acting talents Jackson Yee (“Better Days”) and Shu Qi (“The Assassin”), the production has completed the second segment of its filming. It’s anticipated that it will recommence shooting in the last quarter of this year.

“Resurrection” narrates the tale of a woman who, during surgery, slips into an everlasting time dimension. In this dreamlike state, she encounters an abandoned android body and attempts to revive it by spinning yarns. As these stories unfold, the android becomes more responsive, sensing its surroundings through the narratives.

Under the collaboration with Charles Gillibert’s production house, CG Cinema, this new project signifies Bi’s first film following “Long Day’s Journey Into Night.” Remarkably, the latter featured an outstanding final sequence lasting 59 minutes, presented as a single, extended shot in 3D.

For the movie “Resurrection,” the main team consists of cinematographer Dong Jingsong, known for works like “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” “The Wild Goose Lake,” and “Black Coal, Thin Ice.” Additionally, production designer Tu Nan (of Wong Kar-wai’s “Blossoms Shanghai”) and costume designer Huang Wen-Ying (“The Assassin”) are part of the crew. Bi, a photographer and poet, directed his first feature film, “Kaili Blues,” which received two prizes at Locarno in 2015 and numerous other accolades.

Additionally, Les Films du Losange is managing the distribution of “Misericordia,” a film by Alain Guiraudie that had its premiere at Cannes and will be showcased in various autumn film festivals such as Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival.
