‘One Day at a Time’ Cast Reunites to Table Read Unseen Season 4 Episodes for Norman Lear’s Foundation

As a fan of “One Day at a Time”, it feels heartwarming to see the cast and producers coming together once more to honor the legacy of Norman Lear and support a cause close to their hearts. It’s like getting a chance to reconnect with old friends, reminiscing about the good times we shared through this beloved show. Plus, who doesn’t love a good joke? I can’t wait to see what these talented individuals have in store for us! Let’s hope they don’t cancel it again… or else I might just have to start watching reruns of “The Office” on repeat!

Originally missing from “One Day at a Time” Season 4, three episodes (including the intended series finale) will be brought to life during a charity event. The cast and executive producers of the show are coming together to read unproduced scripts for the late Norman Lear’s People For the American Way foundation on October 5th at the TV Academy’s Saban Media Center in North Hollywood

The funds raised from this gathering will go towards People For the American Way, an organization founded by Lear that advocates for democracy and safeguarding the nation’s liberties. The scripts, initially penned for Season 4 of “One Day at a Time” but never filmed, are part of this event. It is being organized by executive producers Gloria Calderón Kellett, Mike Royce, Brent Miller, and producer Sandi Hochman from “One Day at a Time”

“The original cast of ‘One Day at a Time’ will be reassembled to air previously unaired and unseen episodes, including the planned series finale. This includes not only a revival but also an opportunity for connection with our devoted fans. This endeavor is not just a tribute, but also a means to support a cause dear to us – People For The American Way Foundation, another of Norman Lear’s creations. By doing this, we are upholding Norman’s legacy, the show we cherish and a community that has always been there for us.”

The full cast of the original series, which aired for three seasons on Netflix before moving to Pop TV for an additional season, will all take part. This includes Justina Machado portraying “Penelope”, Rita Moreno as “Lydia”, Stephen Tobolowsky as “Dr. Berkowitz”, Todd Grinnell as “Schneider”, Isabella Gomez as “Elena”, Marcel Ruiz as “Alex”, India de Beaufort as “Avery”, Sheridan Pierce as “Syd” and Ed Quinn as “Max”

The showrunners and executive producer, Gloria Calderón Kellett, will be responsible for the script reading during the upcoming stage. This includes unproduced Season 4 episodes such as “Church and Statement” by Sebastian Jones, “Best Birthday” written by Vincent Brown & Dan Signer, and the series finale titled “Dreams,” co-written by Sebastian Jones & Brigitte Muñoz-Liebowitz

“The President of People For the American Way Foundation, Svante Myrick, commended the team behind ‘One Day at a Time’ for their role in continuing Norman Lear’s efforts. Normon was skilled at depicting diverse families with love, and he believed that every type of family, every American, deserves to be treated fairly, with respect and dignity, and have equal opportunities for liberty. The People For the American Way Foundation is thankful for these efforts as they strive to protect our democracy and ensure that ‘We, the People’ encompasses everyone.”

Originally airing from Sony Pictures TV, the series titled “One Day at a Time” received acclaim for its fresh perspective, featuring a primarily Latino cast reimagining Lear’s 1975 classic series. Seasons 1-3 are still available on Netflix, but after the streaming service decided to discontinue the show in 2019, it was brought back for another season on Pop TV. Unfortunately, Pop TV ceased producing original scripted series in 2020, leading to the cancellation of “One Day at a Time.”

“One Day At A Time” follows three generations of a Cuban-American family. A newly-single mom and military veteran (Justina Machado) journeys through the triumphs and tribulations that come with raising two strong-willed, mega-millennial children (Isabella Gomez, Marcel Ruiz), all the while enlisting the “help” of her old-school mother (Rita Moreno) and her building manager-turned-invaluable confidante (Todd Grinnell). The series also stars Stephen Toblowsky.
