Black Myth: Wukong Has Now Sold 18 Million Copies, Expansion Coming

As a gaming enthusiast who has been following the industry for years, I must say that the success story of Black Myth: Wukong is nothing short of breathtaking! Having witnessed the rise and fall of countless games, I’ve never seen a Chinese-developed game scale such heights so quickly. It’s like striking gold in a digital mine, and it’s fascinating to see how Game Science and Hero Games have managed to tap into a market that was relatively unexplored.

In August, Black Myth: Wukong soared into the market with an impressive 10 million copies sold within its first three days, and since then, this number has grown to a staggering 18 million copies sold over just two weeks. Bloomberg corroborated these new sales figures and additionally disclosed that the game had a production budget of $70 million and was under development for more than six years

“Wu asserts not just our exceptional skills in crafting games, but also our ability to effectively incorporate Chinese themes into compelling narratives,” Wu explained

Black Myth: Wukong has recently surpassed $800 million in earnings, making it the fourth highest-grossing video game in a short period, following Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V (earning $1 billion in just three days), 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 ($1 billion within ten days) and Hogwarts Legacy ($850 million over its initial fortnight)

Wu stated that he, alongside Feng Ji, founder of Game Science, were in a precarious situation, much like two drowning rats, before the creation of Black Myth: Wukong. Prior to this, Game Science’s mobile games had not garnered significant success, and they decided to take a substantial risk by developing a console game specifically for the Chinese market, where mobile gaming is more prevalent
