Acer's New Gaming Laptop Concept Has Some Switch-Like Ideas In Its Design

As a seasoned gamer with years of backpack-aching experiences carrying around bulky controllers and heavy gaming laptops, I must say that Acer’s Project DualPlay concept has piqued my interest! The idea of a controller seamlessly integrating into my laptop, not to mention the pop-up speakers for an immersive gaming experience, sounds like a dream come true.

This week, Acer showcased several new laptops during their IFA Berlin press event, but the standout piece of hardware they revealed is more conceptual in nature. In fact, they’ve released a brief video introducing what they call Acer Project DualPlay – a gaming laptop equipped with its own detachable controller

Just like how I can detach my Joy-Cons from my Nintendo Switch at will, this laptop’s controller can be effortlessly pulled out from its cradle whenever I fancy some cooperative gaming action – as you’ll see in the video below. When not in use, the controller slots neatly under the trackpad, and for an immersive audio experience, the laptop boasts built-in side speakers that pop up when needed

The advantage of this concept is that it reduces the amount of hardware a user needs to carry, as controllers often take up significant space due to their design. Acer’s DualPlay idea features a controller that can be easily detached from its magnetic lock by pressing two fingers on the release button at the top of the keyboard, ensuring a secure fit for when you’re using your laptop for tasks other than gaming

Apart from being packed with RGB lighting, which is synonymous with gaming gear due to its colorful glow surrounding the device’s casing, the DualPlay concept is currently only a tantalizing preview. Whether Acer will actually bring it to market is uncertain at this point. However, they are planning to release several new gaming laptops under their Predator and Orion brands in the near future. Additionally, they unveiled some new gaming monitors and marked their foray into the handheld gaming PC market as well

The Acer Nitro Blaze 7 presents an appealing option compared to the larger Steam Deck and Asus ROG Ally models available today. It’s only 25.6cm wide, 11.3 cm deep, and 2.25 cm high. Under the hood, it boasts a Ryzen 7 8840HS processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 1080p 144hz screen
