Joaquin Phoenix Discusses His Weight Loss For Joker 2 And Says He May Not Do It Again

As a die-hard fan who witnessed Joaquin Phoenix‘s transformative performances in both Joker and now Joker: Folie a Deux, I am simply amazed at his dedication to his craft. The weight loss he underwent for these roles was nothing short of extraordinary, and the fact that it was even more challenging this time around due to dance rehearsals is just mind-blowing.

Similar to his transformation for his award-winning portrayal of Arthur Fleck in the 2019 film “Joker”, Joaquin Phoenix adopted a challenging weight loss regimen for his role as the lead character in the upcoming sequel, “Joker: Folie a Deux”. During an appearance at this week’s Venice Film Festival, Phoenix chose not to disclose the details of his weight loss strategy for the sequel, but shared that it was significantly harder than his previous attempt and he’s hesitant about repeating the process in future projects

Phoenix explained to Variety that while he didn’t delve into the specifics of his diet, he found it more challenging this time due to an increased amount of dance rehearsals compared to last time. He mentioned it felt tougher… but rest assured, it was safe. However, at 49 years old, he thinks he should avoid doing this again

For the first Joker movie, Phoenix lost an impressive 52 pounds by primarily consuming lettuce and steamed vegetables. He found this drastic weight loss left him looking quite gaunt on-screen. However, for the sequel, Joker: Folie a Deux, losing the weight was a tougher process due to the added challenge of the extensive dancing required, which demanded more energy

According to Lady Gaga, #Joker2 isn’t categorized as a musical by her. Instead, she explains that the music serves as an outlet for the characters to convey their feelings more profoundly since the dialogue and scenes alone are insufficient. #Venezia8

During the Venice Film Festival, Lady Gaga (playing Harley) stated that Joker: Folie a Deux isn’t strictly a musical. “I wouldn’t categorize this as a traditional musical per se,” she explained. “The music serves as an outlet for the characters to express themselves when regular dialogue and the scene aren’t enough.”

On the film set, there was a pianist present, as per Gaga’s instructions, to aid in developing and shaping the musical aspects of the movie spontaneously

Recently, fresh glimpses into the upcoming Joker sequel, titled Folie a Deux, have been shared. One clip features Harvey Dent making his debut in the movie for the first time. Another released snippet shows Joker and Harley Quinn inside Arkham Asylum. In this particular scene, Harley recalls her initial encounter with Joker, saying, “When I first saw you on Murray Franklin’s show, I kept hoping you would end up killing yourself. And then, you did. For once in my life, I didn’t feel so lonely anymore.” This suggests a possible connection to Robert De Niro’s character from the initial film and the introduction of Dent, hinting at potential conflicts for the upcoming sequel

The Joker movie titled “Folie a Deux” is set to hit screens on October 4th. This new release builds upon the tremendous success of its predecessor, which garnered more than $1 billion globally. Director Todd Phillips has acknowledged and addressed concerns about the sequel’s expanded budget, emphasizing its significance for enhancing quality and providing better support to the crew. Additionally, Phillips has stood firm in his defense of the original film’s portrayal of violence
