Luminate Streaming Ratings: ‘The Accident’ and ‘The Union’ Lead TV and Film Charts August 23-29

As a movie buff who’s seen more films than I can count (and probably should have been counted), let me tell you that the week of Aug 23-29 was a real corker for streaming content! The Accident and The Union were the clear winners, with Halle Berry’s The Union even topping the overall chart. It seems like everyone in America was glued to their screens, watching these two gems.

During the week of August 23rd to 29th, “The Accident” and “The Union” were the TV shows on streaming platforms that received the highest number of views in the United States, according to Luminate data.

“During its first full week on air, ‘The Accident’ garnered a total of 782 million minutes watched among TV titles. On the other hand, ‘The Union’ held the top spot as both the most-watched movie and overall title with 813.5 million minutes viewed from August 23 to 29. The Halle Berry-Mark Wahlberg film maintained its number one position in the chart for its second full week; it was watched for a total of 1.7 billion minutes on the previous chart.”

In the TV rankings, “Wyatt Earp and the Cowboy War” was the program that came in second place, having been viewed for approximately 8.34 hours by viewers during its initial week of streaming. On the other hand, “American Murder: Laci Peterson” climbed up to third position on the chart during its second week, with a total of about 7.45 hours watched after it debuted with over a billion minutes in its first week.

The following four shows continued to garner significant viewership: “Love Is Blind: UK” (4th place with 328.5 million viewing minutes), “Emily in Paris” Season 4 (5th place with 305 million minutes), “Bad Monkey” (6th place with 279.3 million minutes), and “Untold: The Murder of Air McNair” debuted at the 7th position with 252.9 million minutes watched in its first week on Netflix. Following these were two more repeats, namely “Bel-Air” Season 3 at the 8th place with 235.7 million minutes watched and “Love Island USA” Season 6 at the 9th position with 210.5 million minutes watched. Lastly, a new entry made it onto the chart, “Reasonable Doubt,” which landed at the 10th spot with 190.7 million minutes watched.

During this viewing period, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” was not included in our analysis as it began its second season on the last day of the window. According to Luminate, the series ranked 37th among the most-watched original streaming programs of the week. It’s important to mention that “Rings of Power” is a high-profile title for Amazon, and its performance is crucial. However, it was primarily compared to shows that had a whole week to gather viewership. When we consider other one-day premieres, such as “The Boys” Season 4 on Amazon in June, “Rings of Power” had 63.2 million minutes watched on its first day, while “The Boys” clocked in at 79.9 million minutes with a slightly longer runtime. A clearer picture will emerge once we have data for the season’s opening weekend and first full week of availability.

Among the new releases that made a significant impact, “The Killer” ranked second with a total of 410.8 million minutes viewed during its initial week on Peacock. “Incoming” took third place with 339 million minutes watched in its first week on Netflix. “The Supremes at Earl’s All You Can Eat” followed closely behind, earning fifth place with 139.2 million minutes watched in its opening week on Hulu. Interestingly, “Jackpot!” moved up to fourth position during its second week on the chart, registering a total of 192.5 million minutes viewed at that time.

The remaining sections of the chart were labeled as titles that had fewer than 100 million viewing minutes: “The Sparkers”, “Robin Hood’s Return”, “Where I Am Crashing Down”, and “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F – Back in Town” and “A Domestic Matter”.
