Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey’s Sensual — and Psychedelic — Sexual Awakening in Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Queer’ Earns 9-Minute Venice Ovation

As a movie enthusiast with a soft spot for poignant dramas and captivating performances, I must say that Daniel Craig‘s portrayal in “Queer” has left me utterly spellbound. Having grown up on the silver screen classics of the 50s and 60s, I can confidently assert that this role represents a high point in Craig’s illustrious career. The way he embodies Lee, an American expat navigating love and connection in a foreign land, is nothing short of masterful.

In Luca Guadagnino’s romantic drama “Queer,” Daniel Craig gives his finest performance yet, portraying a gay American expatriate in 1950s Mexico City. The movie, featuring graphic love scenes, left the audience in a packed theater awestruck at its world premiere during the Venice Film Festival on Tuesday night, resulting in a prolonged 9-minute standing ovation.

With the audience clapping enthusiastically, Craig appeared flushed and tearful as he hugged Luca Guadagnino and Andrew Starkey. The crowd echoed with chants of “Luca! Luca! Luca!” as the applause persisted, with each performer making their way down the Sala Grande steps to take a bow. On his turn, Craig blew kisses to the audience, his wife Rachel Weisz beaming with pride. Finally, Craig and Starkey shared an embrace, prompting Guadagnino and the entire audience to cheer loudly as they celebrated their bond.

The story “Queer,” based on William S. Burroughs’ 1985 novel of the same name, revolves around Lee (Craig), a solitary American expat who primarily keeps to himself in a foreign city, interacting only occasionally with other members of the small American community. However, his chance encounter with Eugene Allerton, a fresh young student in the city, offers him the prospect of forming an intimate relationship for the first time.

Guadagnino’s “Challengers” collaborator Justin Kuritzkes penned the screenplay, and the cast also includes Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, Henry Zaga, Drew Droege, Ariel Schulman, Colin Bates, Ronia Ava, Perla Ambrosini and Simon Rizzoni.

Craig makes his debut at the Venice Film Festival with “Queer”, having previously filmed scenes for the James Bond movie “Casino Royale” in the historic Italian city of Venice. Meanwhile, it’s also the festival premiere for up-and-coming actor Starkey, who is expected to gain significant recognition following this role.

Renowned Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino has built a strong association with the festival, as he has introduced several films throughout his career there. His debut directorial work, “The Protagonists,” was first shown in 1999, followed by the documentary “Cuoco Contandino” in 2004. He also premiered the Desire Trilogy installments “I Am Love” (2009) and “A Bigger Splash” (2015), both featuring Tilda Swinton. The horror remake “Suspiria,” released in 2018 with Dakota Johnson, was another one of his films shown at the festival. His more recent works include a Ferragamo documentary titled “The Shoemaker of Dreams” from 2020 and the romantic horror film “Bones and All” (2022), starring Timothée Chalamet and Taylor Russell, which earned him the Silver Lion for best direction.
