Giulio Donato’s ‘Labyrinths,’ Premiering in Venice, Debuts Clip (EXCLUSIVE)

As a movie critic who has spent countless hours immersed in the labyrinthine world of celluloid dreams, I find myself captivated by Giulio Donato’s “Labyrinths.” This film, a testament to the power of storytelling and the human spirit, resonates deeply with my own journey.

Giulio Donato’s film titled “Labyrinths,” showing outside the main competition at Venice Days – an independent section of the Venice Film Festival – recently released its initial trailer (as shown below). The distribution of international rights for this movie is being managed by Open Reel.

The story revolves around Francesco, a quiet individual, who was born in a rural village nestled amidst the mountains of Calabria, enveloped by nature. His childhood companion was Mimmo, with whom he confided everything until their teenage years. A pivotal moment arrives when he discovers a book that seems almost magical, altering the trajectory of his life.

Francesco harbors a dream that he intends to chase, defying all obstacles, be they from the world or individuals: it’s not just the society encircling him, with its complex, unspoken psychological and societal regulations that make him feel ensnared in a maze, but also Mimmo.

In his statement, the director expressed that when creating ‘Labyrinths’, he aimed to draw inspiration from reality and generate something unique through filming. He chose to situate the narrative midway between reality and fiction, consistently applying this approach across all elements of the movie. Consequently, he opted for a dual approach in his work: on one hand, an extremely realistic depiction, designed to keep viewers almost unaware they’re watching a film, while retaining the authentic feel of uncertainty found in reality; on the other hand, a more deliberate and artistic representation of Francesco’s dreams.

“I chose to keep the sets largely unchanged, shoot many scenes handheld for a more realistic feel, collaborate with actors by blending their real-life experiences with their characters’ roles, and create scenes and dialogues together. At the same time, I decided to use subjective, steadier shots for the dream sequences, along with an immersive soundtrack and the lead character’s voiceover. My goal was to make these two styles coexist, ensuring the film had unity and a clear narrative structure, while still maintaining a noticeable stylistic contrast. This distinction aimed to emphasize the differences between the two worlds and their unique perspectives on reality.”

This ensemble features Francesco Grillo, Simone Iorgi, Stella Mastrantonio, Finn Ronsdorf, Davide Fasano, Antonio Gerardi, and Massimo De Santis.

The producer is Francesco Cimpanelli for Life Cinema. The executive producer is Giulio Donato.
