‘Chaplin, Spirit of the Tramp,’ Directed by Chaplin’s Granddaughter, Boarded by Film Constellation (EXCLUSIVE)

As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the magical world of cinema, I can’t help but feel both exhilarated and humbled by the announcement of “Chaplin, Spirit of the Tramp.” Having grown up watching the iconic comedian’s films, it’s fascinating to see a fresh perspective on his life and work, one that delves deeper into his personal life and Romani roots.

The film “Chaplin, Spirit of the Tramp” – a feature documentary helmed by Charlie Chaplin’s granddaughter, Carmen Chaplin – has been acquired for international distribution rights by Film Constellation. This film is scheduled to make its world debut at the San Sebastian International Film Festival.

The documentary provides a personal glimpse into the life of the famous English-born movie director and comedian in his family circle, while also examining his Romani heritage that influenced the development of his cherished character, the Tramp. It offers interviews, film clips, home videos, and insights from well-known contemporary Roma artists such as Tony Gatlif, Stochelo Rosenberg, Lita Cabellut, and Farruquito, among others.

Carmen Chaplin’s first directorial film is enriched by exclusive behind-the-scenes insights from the Chaplin estate, granted through cooperation with the Chaplin Office, the Chaplin family, and MK2 films. During interviews, she consulted several relatives such as Michael J. Chaplin, Geraldine Chaplin, Victoria Chaplin, Jane Chaplin, and Christopher Chaplin.

“Carmen Chaplin shared her unique perspective on the well-known tale of her grandfather, Charlie Chaplin. Instead of retelling the story as it has been told before, she chose to approach it from a personal standpoint, viewing it through the lens of her father’s experiences. By delving into our family history and sifting through old family records, we aim to present an original account focusing on our family lineage, Chaplin’s legacy, and the Romani Traveler culture. This narrative provides audiences with a fresh viewpoint about Chaplin as both a man and an artist, offering them new insights into his life and work.”

This joint production titled “Chaplin, Spirit of a Tramp” is being developed collaboratively by Wave of Humanity, Basque Films, and Atlantika Films, along with Kwanon Films and Roy Export. It also receives support from Submarine Sublime and Constellation Prods for co-production.

Carmen Chaplin collaborated on the script for this film alongside Ashim Bhalla, Isaki Lacuesta, and Amaya Remírez García. Editing duties were handled by Julia Juaniz (“Finding Steve McQueen”), cinematography was overseen by Kenneth Oribe (“Fronteras”), and original music composition was done by Nathaniel Méchaly, who is known for his work on the “Taken” series.

Film Constellation, led by Fabien Westerhoff with branches in both London and Paris, boasts a bustling fall schedule. Upcoming premieres include “Bonjour Tristesse,” directed by Durga Chew-Bose, which will open the Discovery section at Toronto International Film Festival, featuring stars like Chloë Sevigny, Claes Bang, and Lily McInerny. Additionally, Michael Tyburski’s comedy romance “Turn on Me,” starring Bel Powley and Nick Robinson, is slated for the New Directors competition at San Sebastian Film Festival.

About two years back, the company established its own production division called Constellation Prods. Since then, it has been actively participating in numerous films, often serving as a co-financier. In the case of “Bonjour Tristesse,” an English adaptation of Francoise Sagan’s renowned novel, the company is not only involved but also holds the position of executive producer.
