As a connoisseur of global cinema, steeped in the rich tapestry of narratives that reflect our diverse world, I am thrilled by the announcement of “Marie & Jolie.” This film, with its intriguing premise and stellar cast, promises to delve into the complexities of life in Tunisia, a subject close to my heart given my deep-rooted appreciation for the Maghrebi culture.
Paris-based sales agent Luxbox has backed Erige Sehiri’s next feature, “Marie & Jolie.”
Anna Ciennik, Sehiri, and Malika Cécile Louati wrote this drama, which is being produced by Henia Production and Didar Domehri of Maneki Films. The story delves into the tranquil Christian communities in the primarily Muslim city of Tunis. Pathé Afrique and Jour2Fête have joined as distributors from Tunisia and France, respectively, and filming is currently underway.
The project currently showcased at the Venice Gap-Financing Market has garnered development assistance from the Doha Film Institute, Tunisian Ministry of Cultural Affairs, and Fonds Image de la Francophonie. It also includes involvement from TV5MONDE, along with financial backing from Rotterdam’s Hubert Bals Fund.
Actors Aïssa Maïga (“Bamako”), Laetitia Ky (“Night of the Kings,” “Disco Boy”) and newcomer Deborah Naney live together in a house that secretly functions as an Evangelical church. When they take in a child migrant who was rescued from a shipwreck, each resident must reevaluate their role within the household and in society at large.
According to Sehiri, it’s common knowledge that many people move from Africa to Europe, but the truth is that about 80% of migrants actually travel within Africa itself. Interestingly, some of these migrants even choose to settle in North Africa. Sharing their stories provides a fresh perspective and another way to perceive the world.
“Sehiri explains, ‘I selected each actress based on their real-world personas.’ They needed to authentically portray modern-day Tunisia, including its economic struggles, migration issues, as well as the violence and racism faced by the Black community. Yet, they had to shed all these burdens in their performances.'”
Previously, Sehiri and producer Didar Domehri worked together on Sehiri’s second movie titled “Under the Fig Trees.” Following its win at Final Cut in Venice during 2021, this film was chosen to represent Tunisia in the 2023 Academy Awards.
Domehri expresses great joy about directing Erige Sehiri’s latest movie. Once again, she skillfully crafts intricate characters and offers a fresh, unique viewpoint on the role of women and their migration experiences in Tunisia. This film follows three women as they navigate a progressively challenging situation, serving as yet another example of Sehiri’s ability to illuminate hidden narratives.
