Venice’s ‘The Witness’ Adds Sales, Trailer Debuts, Director Talks Iran Situation, Working With Jafar Panahi (EXCLUSIVE)

“The Witness,” debuting at the Venice Film Festival, has been acquired for distribution in Benelux, France, Italy, and previously reported Germany. Directed by Nader Saeivar, co-written with Jafar Panahi, the film presents a trailer (see below). Saeivar shares, “I’ve collaborated with Jafar Panahi since 2017 for ‘3 Faces.’ He showed me it’s possible to create an excellent film with a small team in secrecy. Perhaps this style of filmmaking was pioneered by Panahi himself.” Panahi, who has faced persecution and imprisonment, including a recent release from jail following a hunger strike in 2023, has been instrumental in Saeivar’s filmmaking journey, instilling courage and the importance of not making excuses.

Riahi and Sabine Grüber, from Golden Girls Films, as well as Emre Oskay and Timur Savci of Sky Films, all played significant roles in its creation.
