This love triangle involves a middle-aged couple and a younger woman, whose complex relationships are brought to light and subjected to thorough examination from all perspectives when a skilled relationship terminator is hired.

The Chinese-American documentary shown in Venice’s Horizons section stands out uniquely due to its subjects’ frankness and the remarkable behind-the-scenes approach it employs.

The first scene in the movie features a long, unchanging shot of a woman crying softly while having her hair styled under a dryer. This sets the somber mood for the story. In the second scene, we see a disheartening dinner where the woman attempts to understand her husband’s emotional detachment, only to find he barely notices the new hairstyle – this strengthens her resolve to seek external assistance.

In the third act’s segment, a disheartened woman seeks help from one of China’s numerous marriage counselors. This professional isn’t just asked to conduct some investigative work, but also to rectify the issues uncovered, thereby concluding the first act.

The narrative that unfolds involves a series of private conversations taking place in cafes and cars. These encounters are characterized by deep, heartfelt confessions (“The husband, Mr. Li, confesses, ‘There is a girl'”). Counseling also plays a role. Guiding this process is an intermediary figure known as “Teacher Wang,” who employs deceit to win the trust of both the unsuspecting husband and his younger girlfriend from another city.

The film lacks explicit bedroom scenes or exaggerated outbursts, leaving one to question the romantic relationship between Mr. Li and Zhou Feifei. However, the intense and poignant feelings portrayed are so vividly expressed that at moments, viewers might find themselves compelled to avert their gaze.

As a cinephile with an interest in societal exploration, I found myself drawn to delve into the role of women in rapidly evolving China, following my examination of stray canines in “Strays.” In contrast to traditional matchmaking practices, which I also researched extensively, the industry centered around courtesans is relatively new, having emerged less than a decade ago.

“Lo explained that the idea of turning this sector into a film came about when we met Teacher Wang. She had a unique ability to persuade her clients to appear on camera, which was quite unusual. This singular moment inspired Lo to create a film that would delve deeply into love triangles from every perspective.”

As soon as filming commenced in 2021, the project encountered numerous setbacks when some contributors decided to withdraw. However, Lo claims that obtaining financing was a fairly straightforward process.

According to Lo, the unique and peculiar nature of our script, along with our unconventional method that avoided sensationalism, led us to adopt a clever strategy that drew viewers into this world in a tasteful and amusing manner. This approach proved captivating to investors, enabling us to secure funds for further production. We then resumed filming for an additional three years.

With a bustling office team by her side, engaging in conversations that blend detective-like scrutiny with advisory wisdom, Wang stands out as a captivating lead character. However, the ethical nature of her actions often raises questions.

“Lo finds the nature of her work, particularly the deception involved, challenging on a personal level. He explains that if she openly declared herself as a therapist helping with marital issues in China, she would likely be rejected due to cultural sensitivities around domestic issues. Instead, Lo suggests, she needs to use a disguise because directness isn’t feasible in this context. This disguise serves a purpose, according to Lo.”

Lo noted: “Charlotte Munch Bengtsen, my fellow editor and writer, and I were mindful of shielding our characters, our main figures, since they had guided us into the deepest scars of their existence… We never dictated their actions or words. Instead, we aimed to let the story develop as naturally as possible. However, it’s important to remember that, as documentary filmmakers, the presence of the camera can influence changes in their behavior.”

Wang informed the filmmakers that the trio showcased their finest selves on screen. However, Lo pointed out that the compiled and edited footage retained a strong emotional impact. “I find the contrast between their polished portrayals and their genuine emotions intriguing,” she stated. “The tension between those two aspects is compelling to observe, especially as it reveals itself on camera.” In cinematic terms, we aimed to create an environment that allows viewers to closely analyze the scenes themselves.

Throughout the film, Lo intersperses scenes with brief glimpses of faces, various landscapes, urban Chinese scenery, and businesses operating within the matchmaking industry. She explains that these segments serve to enrich the context rather than carry any political significance.
