There’s an A24 Easter Egg in Babygirl

As a seasoned critic with a penchant for uncovering the intricacies of filmmaking, I must say that A24’s latest offering, Babygirl, is a testament to their unique brand of cinematic storytelling. It’s not every day you find an intern-boss dynamic played out in the very office where the studio’s executive meetings take place!

One method of rephrasing for a more natural and easy-to-understand style: You can often recognize an A24 film by certain elements. For instance, it might involve a sinister bird or someone being torched. The overall atmosphere may also be eerie. Recently, the studio’s latest erotic drama titled “Babygirl” has found another way to indicate its A24 origin. It’s not just about the graphic sex scenes or its provocative exploration of power dynamics in the workplace, but a more straightforward clue: The movie was filmed within A24’s own New York office building.

It’s important to clarify that I’m not revealing confidential information about an independent film studio; rather, it’s information shared by several people associated with the studio following the premiere of “Babygirl” at Venice. The scenes supposedly set at Nicole Kidman’s robotics company were actually filmed at A24’s office in a part of Manhattan known as the Ace Hotel micro-neighborhood.

In some instances, scenes were not filmed within the actual office. If Director Halina Reijn had access to their bathrooms, which resemble high-end airport lounges, I’m confident she would have utilized them. However, during production over the holidays, when the office was unoccupied, it made sense to use alternative locations. A24 has achieved significant success by deviating from conventional spending practices, especially in marketing. Reducing location fees might simply be another smart cost-cutting measure.

As a movie enthusiast, I must admit, there’s something exhilarating about recognizing your workplace on the silver screen. In the second season of ‘Succession’, Kendall Roy paid a visit to Vaulter’s offices, which were filmed in our former building on Varick Street, just above the New York Magazine offices. Unfortunately for Vaulter, whose name bore a striking resemblance to ours, their story didn’t exactly pan out well. However, ‘Babygirl’ had a more optimistic ending, allowing us to focus on what truly matters: Their coffee machine certainly looks top-notch!
