Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the first episode of From season 4, titled “Arrival.” Ahead of the show’s final season, From has resolved a long-standing issue with one of its characters. Just days before the season 4 premiere, the show was also renewed for a fifth season, which will conclude the MGM+ horror series.
It’s good news that From was renewed for season 5 relatively quickly after season 4 premiered – especially since there was a year and a half between seasons 3 and 4. However, this early renewal also suggests the show will end sooner than some fans expected, considering how many unanswered questions and new mysteries remain.
Extending the show to five seasons allowed creators to resolve a recurring issue that surfaced in the second-to-last season. After the release of season 2 in 2023, the series sometimes struggled to give enough focus to its large and growing number of characters, but season 4 successfully addresses this.
From Kept Introducing Too Many New Characters
Season 1 of From already featured a large group of characters, including the Matthews family, Jade Herrera, and the residents of the Township. Season 2 added even more faces when a busload of new arrivals appeared, such as Marielle, Randall Kirkland, Elgin Williams, Tillie, and Bakta.
In the third season finale, Tabitha Matthews (Catalina Sandino Moreno) unexpectedly returns to town by ambulance, bringing with her new characters like Henry Kavanaugh (Robert Joy) and Acosta (Samantha Brown). The episode also unveils the Man in Yellow (Douglas E. Hughes), a key villain who is central to the show’s ongoing mysteries.
New characters like Henry have been a great addition to the show, adding depth to the stories of Tabitha and Victor Kavanaugh (played by Scott McCord). However, with so many new faces, some established and important characters are getting less attention and aren’t being developed as fully as they used to.
A good example of a recurring problem with the show’s characters is Kristi Miller (Chloe Van Landschoot). She was a strong, well-developed character in the first few seasons, but after a foot injury, she was used much less in season 3. Sometimes, she felt like she existed only to provide medical advice, rather than being a fully realized person – a consequence of the show having so many main characters. Although the cast remains large even after some characters died, season 4 is making a positive change by giving more focus to individual characters.
Season 4’s Sophia Fixes The New Character Problem
Before season 4 began, Julia Doyle was announced as a new regular cast member, playing Sophia, a naive and delicate pastor’s daughter. Many worried adding another main character would worsen existing issues with the show, but the season 4 premiere cleverly resolved this by revealing Sophia is actually the person behind the mysterious Man in Yellow.
Rather than distracting from established characters or slowing down their development, Sophia serves a purpose: she helps viewers understand the Man in Yellow after his initial appearance in the season 3 finale. Getting to know this character, who seems to be the main villain, is more impactful than just adding another person to the town.
Following the latest episode, viewers learned through Sophia that the Man in Yellow has the power to change his appearance and can cause people to lose consciousness or have a seizure with just a touch, as demonstrated with the pastor, Rhys Bevan-John. Sophia also revealed that the Man in Yellow intends to manipulate the town’s residents into turning against each other, and his enjoyment suggests this has happened before as part of a repeating pattern in the Township.
Now that the pastor is gone and Sophia has been revealed as the Man in Yellow, season 4 of From can focus more on the characters we’ve already met and move the story toward its conclusion.
