A parachutist collided with a large stadium screen and became suspended high in the air, where firefighters worked to bring them down safely.
Virginia Tech’s spring football game was scheduled to start at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Before the game, a skydiver was planned to land on the field carrying the American flag. The stadium was packed with excited fans, waiting for the skydiver to complete the jump just before kickoff.
While parachuting, the man was blown off course by 15 mph winds and crashed into the video screen at Lane Stadium. His parachute became tangled, leaving him hanging high above the ground.
Virginia Tech Fire Department lead rescue efforts
A man was stuck high up and needed to be rescued with a crane. The Virginia Tech fire department responded to help get him down.
Wow, things just got crazy at the Virginia Tech game! Someone parachuting in was a cool idea, but it didn’t quite go as planned – they actually hit the scoreboard! He seems alright, thankfully, but seriously, what just happened?!

Game play was put on hold as officials left the field to allow rescue teams to work. Virginia Tech later confirmed the skydiver was safe.
We’re happy to share that the skydiver landed safely and is doing okay. Their health and recovery are our top priority. We want to thank the first responders, event staff, and medical teams for their quick, organized, and professional work.
