As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve witnessed the ebb and flow of the gaming industry like the tides of time itself. The news of Tencent and NetEast scaling back their investments in Japanese video game studios has left me both intrigued and a bit nostalgic.
It appears that companies such as Tencent and NetEase are reducing their financial commitments towards Japanese video game production firms, primarily because they’ve yet to produce any significant successes, leading to the closure of Ouka Studio, known for its creation of Visions of Mana.
Based on Bloomberg reports, the team at Ouka Studio, owned by NetEase, has undergone significant downsizing starting in the spring. Now, there are only a handful of individuals remaining at Ouka Studios, who will be responsible for launching their final games before the studio officially shuts down.
Furthermore, Tencent secured the permission to distribute the mobile variant of Bandai Namco’s Blue Protocol. Yet, Bandai Namco disclosed this past week their intention to halt game support by 2025, which also includes the shelving of the global launch through Amazon Games.
It seems there’s a discrepancy in objectives between Tencent and Japanese game creators. The local Japanese developers prefer working on smaller-scale, less risky ventures, whereas Tencent is aiming for globally recognized franchises. Consequently, when it comes to financial backing, Tencent apparently sets loftier standards for these developers.
Here are a few instances where NetEase has invested in Japanese game studios:
