Peaky Blinders Doubles Up on Famous Irishmen

As a movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the gritty underworld of post-WW1 Birmingham, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the upcoming “Peaky Blinders” film! The series, with its captivating narrative and unforgettable characters, has long been a staple of my viewing schedule. The news that Cillian Murphy will reprise his iconic role as Tommy Shelby is music to my ears, and I can’t help but feel a sense of satisfaction that my persistent pleas (and Margot Robbie’s) have finally paid off!

The power of persuasion proved effective! In a past interview, Margot Robbie earnestly asked Cillian Murphy to reprise his character as Tommy Shelby by expressing her plea with “please do it, please.” Recently, Netflix has announced that they are indeed producing a Peaky Blinders movie. The show, which ended in 2022 after six seasons, focuses on a crime gang based in post-WWI Birmingham, England. In the final episode, Tommy Shelby rode off on a horse, leaving his fate ambiguous. Although it won’t be a full season, viewers can expect the usual thrills as series creator Steven Knight pens the script and Tom Harper, who directed several episodes from season one, takes the helm. As the saying goes, never underestimate the Peaky Blinders! Here are the latest updates about the film, beginning with the addition of Barry Keoghan to the cast.

Who’s going to be in it?

The much-anticipated name by enthusiasts of this series is Cillian Murphy, who appears to be instrumental in the movie’s creation. And guess what? He’s returning! In a statement released in June, Murphy expressed, “It feels like Tommy Shelby still has business with me unfinished.” He further added, “I am thrilled to once again work alongside Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film adaptation of Peaky Blinders. This is for the fans, but especially Margot (his character’s love interest).”

I’m thrilled to share that two esteemed actors are stepping into the world of “Peaky Blinders” for the first time. Barry Keoghan, known not just from Saltburn but also his relationship with Sabrina Carpenter, has joined our ranks on August 29, bumping up our roster of Prestige Irishmen to two. Paul Mescal and Colin Farrell, prepare yourselves! Rejoice, as Rebecca Ferguson, though not a native Irishwoman herself (though her maternal grandmother was Northern Irish), grew up in Sweden. Let’s welcome her with a friendly “Hej!”

What’s this movie going to be about?

Although Netflix hasn’t disclosed specific plot details for the upcoming film, Knight revealed in 2022 that it would be a spinoff set during World War II. He further mentioned to Netflix that this movie would be an “explosive chapter” and likened it to “Peaky Blinders in war.” Let’s hope the storyline doesn’t involve Shelby’s signature hairstyle being concealed by a military helmet.

When is it out?

No word on a release date yet, but probably not March 17. That’d be tacky.
