Monster Hunter's Success Means Capcom Doesn't Need Dino Crisis, Resident Evil Creator Says

As a seasoned gamer who has been around since the late 90s, I can’t help but feel a tinge of nostalgia upon hearing Shinji Mikami’s words about Dino Crisis. The original game was a staple of my early gaming years, and its blend of horror and survival mechanics was truly groundbreaking. However, I must admit that I understand where he’s coming from.

In simpler terms, Shinji Mikami, the director of Resident Evil, expressed that because Monster Hunter has been incredibly successful, he doesn’t believe it’s necessary to create a new Dino Crisis game.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Mikami expressed his astonishment at the number of people yearning for a new Dino Crisis game. He stated that the appeal of dinosaurs and the possibilities they offer have been effectively realized by Monster Hunter in more contemporary times.

Mikami went on to say, “In truth, if given the chance to reboot or create a fresh take on Dino Crisis, I’m not finding much room for that genre at present, mainly due to the immense popularity of Monster Hunter. It’s quite astonishing, indeed.”

Last year, Capcom unveiled Exoprimal, a multiplayer third-person shooter game, sparking excitement among fans who initially believed it was a new Dino Crisis title. However, they were later let down as it turned out not to be the case. Despite this initial confusion, the game has received generally positive feedback, with TopMob giving it a 7/10 score. It’s important to mention that Shinji Mikami, who was once associated with Capcom, is no longer involved with the company as he departed years ago to establish Tango Gameworks. He left Tango Gameworks in 2023.

As of March 2024, the action-adventure game Monster Hunter: World has been purchased more than 25 million times globally. The upcoming installment in the series, Monster Hunter Wilds, is scheduled for launch in 2025.

In 1999, Mikami served as the producer for the initial release of Dino Crisis. Now, he is working at his own studio, Kamuy, having moved on from Tango.
