IFC Films Releases First Teary-Eyed Trailer for Animated Feature Oscar Hopeful ‘Memoir of a Snail’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As a connoisseur of animated films and a lover of poignant narratives, I find myself utterly captivated by Adam Elliot’s latest masterpiece, “Memoir of a Snail.” This film is a testament to Elliot’s dedication and passion for storytelling, as it took nearly a decade to bring this beautiful tale to life.

In the upcoming trailer for “Memoir of a Snail,” an animated film by Adam Elliot and distributed by IFC Films, we get a glimpse of the heartwarming bond between siblings depicted through the unique, whimsical characteristics of a snail. This enchanting tale will make its North American debut at the Telluride Film Festival, as announced in today’s schedule.

The captivating adult drama in stop-motion spanned almost a decade in production, and it narrates the life of Grace Puddle, a solitary oddball with a fervor for decorative snails and an ardor for romance novels. However, her life takes a bleak turn when she’s parted from her twin sibling at a tender age. In spite of continuous struggles, Grace presses on, finding motivation through a bond with Pinky, a quirky old woman, as she gradually learns to embrace self-assurance and affection.

The movie preview showcases the journey of twin characters, starting from infancy and progressing through adolescence. Along the way, they face bullies, ride rollercoasters, and come across elderly women wearing swimsuits. Accompanied by stirring background music and a fair share of emotional moments, it underscores the film’s sincere emotions and the intricate craftsmanship in its stop-motion animation technique.

“Elliot’s second feature film in stop-motion animation, titled ‘Memoir of a Snail’, comes after his highly praised work ‘Mary and Max’ (2009), which debuted at Sundance. Elliot, who won an Oscar for the best animated short ‘Harvie Krumpet’ (2003), is both the writer and director for this heartfelt animated movie. This production boasts the voice talents of Emmy winner Sarah Snook (‘Succession’), along with Academy Award nominees Kodi Smit-McPhee (‘The Power of the Dog’) and Jacki Weaver (‘Animal Kingdom’). Additionally, Eric Bana (‘Munich’) and renowned musician/composer Nick Cave lend their voices to this project.”

The movie made its debut at the Annecy Film Festival in June, where it garnered exceptional acclaim and was awarded the highest honor, the Cristal Award for the best feature film. Notably, Elliot emerged as the festival’s double recipient of this esteemed accolade.

Peter Debruge, the lead film critic at EbMaster’s, commended the film’s unique blend of “somber yet emotionally impactful storytelling,” noting that its visual style resembles Edward Gorey’s near-monochromatic palette, with characters often appearing to confront the camera in a manner reminiscent of Wes Anderson’s characters posing for melancholic school photos. Additionally, Debruge observed that the film’s humor, similar to John Waters’, is daring enough to tackle subjects ranging from disabilities to unconventional sexual preferences.

The film will open in limited release on Oct. 25, with a wider expansion throughout November.
