The Acolyte's Cancelation Was No Shock To Amandla Stenberg After "Rampage Of Vitriol"

As a seasoned gamer and Star Wars enthusiast who’s weathered countless twists and turns in the galaxy far, far away, it’s disheartening to see the abrupt ending of The Acolyte. It was not just another show for us; it was an opportunity to explore new corners of the Star Wars universe through Amandla Stenberg‘s captivating portrayal of Osha and Mae.

This month, news surfaced that The Acolyte had been terminated following its first season on Disney+. Lee Jung-jae, who portrayed Jedi Master Sol in the show, appeared taken aback by the cancellation of The Acolyte. Contrarily, Amandla Stenberg, the lead actress playing twin sisters Osha and Mae, stated that the decision wasn’t entirely unexpected following the criticism the series faced since its announcement.

Through Deadline, Stenberg shared an extensive message on her Instagram Stories. In her post, she explained that since the show was first announced, even before it was actually produced, there has been a wave of harsh criticism we’ve encountered. She further detailed that this negativity included hyper-conservative bigotry, prejudiced hatred, and hateful speech directed towards her and the rest of the cast.

Earlier, during The Acolyte’s season, Stenberg openly addressed this backlash with an original song she released about it. Despite encountering harsh criticism, Stenberg expressed her continued appreciation for being allowed to participate in the Star Wars universe.

Stenberg expressed, “It’s truly been an extraordinary privilege and dream come true for me to be part of this cosmos. Although I’m undeniably disheartened about the series getting canceled and not being able to continue providing more for its dedicated fans, I can’t help but feel a sense of lightness and joy from the fact that I was allowed to participate in it, and that people adored it so much and were so engaged.”

The eight episodes of The Acolyte are currently available on Disney+, but the series has left many questions unanswered and some plotlines unresolved, which may not be addressed in live-action in the future. However, it’s plausible that these loose ends could be tied up in a future storyline set during the High Republic era. For now, it seems that The Acolyte won’t receive a definitive ending.
