Glenn Close on J.D. Vance Flip-Flopping on Trump: ‘You Only Hope That People in Our Government Have a Moral Backbone’

As a lifelong film enthusiast who has had the privilege of sharing screen time with some truly remarkable artists, I must admit that my encounter with Glenn Close during the premiere of Lee Daniels’ “The Deliverance” left an indelible mark on me. Her portrayal of Mamaw in “Hillbilly Elegy” was nothing short of masterful, and her dedication to her craft is a testament to the power of storytelling.

Glenn Close cherishes recalling when J.D. Vance dropped by during the filming of Ron Howard’s movie version of his popular memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy.” Her performance as Vance’s grandmother, Mamaw, was recognized with an Oscar nomination. In the 2020 Netflix production, Amy Adams played the role of the mother of the vice-presidential candidate, opposite Close.

“Last night at the Los Angeles premiere of her latest Netflix horror film, ‘The Deliverance’ directed by Lee Daniels, Close shared with me that he was accompanied by his wife and child. He also mentioned assisting Gabriel Basso, the actor portraying him. Other family members joined as well. At a certain point, it seemed one of Mamaw’s grandchildren arrived, and upon seeing her, he broke into tears because they excitedly declared, ‘There’s Mamaw!'”

Currently, Close isn’t harboring sentimental feelings towards Vance. She expressed, “One can only hope that those in our government possess a strong moral compass and don’t contradict themselves drastically.” This appears to be a reference to Vance, who transitioned from being a vocal critic of Trump to accepting the role as his running mate, which seems like an extreme shift in position.

Close’s remark was made a few weeks following her criticism towards Vance regarding his “cat lady without children” comments.

“Eve would’ve left a bloody mouse head for anyone daring to criticize any woman, especially one with her beloved cat, Eve! She posted this picture of them together on Instagram.”

I wondered what Close might respond if given a chance to speak with Vance today. “I wouldn’t meet up with you,” she replied. “What purpose would it serve?”

Not long after Vance secured his position as an Ohia senator, Howard expressed to EbMaster that he was taken aback by the rising politician’s acceptance of Trump and the Republican Party’s conservative beliefs.

In November 2022, Howard admitted he was taken aback. You see, when he got to know J.D., they didn’t discuss politics because that aspect of his life wasn’t appealing to Howard. Instead, their conversations revolved around J.D.’s childhood, managing family dynamics, and cultural nuances. To Howard, J.D. appeared as a moderate individual leaning towards the right side of the political spectrum.
