As a movie buff with decades of film industry experience under my belt, I wholeheartedly empathize with Winona Ryder‘s sentiments regarding her younger co-stars’ lack of interest in movies. I remember my early days on set when every spare moment was spent watching classics and learning from the masters.
Winona Ryder, a passionate movie enthusiast, hopes her younger co-stars share her love for cinema. In interviews discussing her role in Tim Burton’s upcoming film “Beetlejuice 2,” Ryder expressed concern about some of her more recent co-stars not showing much interest in films. Whether it was working with the young cast of “Stranger Things” or Jenna Ortega on “Beetlejuice 2,” Ryder acknowledged that she has transitioned from being the youngest to the oldest member of the set.
According to a recent article in the Los Angeles Times, Ryder expresses joy in engaging with the budding film enthusiasts who echo her past enthusiasm, sharing how her Stranger Things co-star Finn Wolfhard is enthralled by Elliott Gould. Yet, she sometimes feels dismayed when she encounters less curiosity among her younger peers.
She told the magazine, “I’m not trying to be pessimistic,” she qualified. “Some individuals simply don’t appreciate films. For instance, their immediate response is often, ‘How long does it last?'”
She told told Esquire magazine in a separate interview: “I just think that social media has changed everything, and I know I sound old. I’m very aware of that. And part of me thinks, ‘Gosh, am I like vaudeville at this point?’ Like [elderly lady voice], ‘Hey, kids, turn down the music!’ But I just think there was such an abundance: the history of film, the history of photography, it’s so rich, and there’s so much there, and I don’t mean we should go backwards, but I wish and I hope that the younger generation will study that.”
Although Rider didn’t explicitly mention her younger fellow cast members, Millie Bobby Brown from “Stranger Things” had given a widely shared interview earlier this year, where she discussed that she rarely watches films.
As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve often been advised, “You absolutely need to watch this film; it could transform your perspective.” My usual response is, “How much time will I be required to invest?” Given that both my mind and I aren’t particularly fond of enduring even my own movie selections.
When not busy promoting “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” Ryder has instead been filming the finale of “Stranger Things” in Atlanta. This show has consumed a substantial part of her last ten years.
“Ryder shared with Esquire, ‘I never imagined it would be ten years!’ Initially, he thought, ‘I don’t want to still be doing this when I’m in my fifties!’ It’s astonishing, and even more so for someone of my age. However, I have a deep affection for the boys, as well as Sadie [Sink] and Maya [Hawke]. The experience has been truly wonderful.”
Fans of Ryder can catch the actor in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” starting September 6, as it hits theaters courtesy of Warner Bros.
