As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I must say that the reveal of Batman Arkham Shadow for Meta Quest 3 has truly piqued my interest. I’ve been a fan of the Arkham series since its inception and the prospect of diving into Gotham City in virtual reality is nothing short of exhilarating.
Although garnering attention with its venture into virtual reality, Batman Arkham Shadow stands out as the marquee game for the Meta Quest 3 headset at present. The market is still relatively sparse in terms of Quest 3 exclusives, but the outcome (be it positive or negative) of this Arkham Asylum prequel may significantly impact the future of Meta’s latest VR technology.
At the Gamescom Opening Night Live event on August 20, 2024, Meta unveiled gameplay of their upcoming VR game. Although the game was announced several months prior, there had been no indication of the Arkham-esque combat that Meta showcased. However, all of that changed during the latest event, and it appears to be an Arkham-inspired title – albeit somewhat scaled back for virtual reality.
Similar to how Arkham games offer a flatscreen experience, players equipped with the Meta Quest 3 headset will assume the role of the legendary DC superhero, gliding through Gotham as Batman himself. In this narrative, set prior to Asylum but following Origins, you’ll be hot on the trail of the Rat King, engaging in intense encounters where you both intimidate scared criminals and catch unsuspecting foes off guard.
Absolutely, given that virtual reality games can sometimes make you feel queasy, the Arkham combat style isn’t as quick as Rocksteady Games’ take on Batman. However, the counter system is still present in a fresh format, and it’s quite gratifying to deliver a series of blows that leave an enemy with a broken jaw.
I’m thrilled to find that the stealth mechanics seem reminiscent of the cherished formula, enabling me to sneak in the dark and silence guards just as the Arkham games taught me.
Regrettably, we don’t have a specific release date for Arkham Shadow as of now. The initial announcement provided a general Fall 2024 timeline, and more recently, we received an update specifying that the game might be released in October 2024. However, no exact launch date has been set yet. Given the game’s eerie theme, it wouldn’t be surprising if it was indeed launched towards the end of October.
