YouTuber who risked life to give North Sentinel Island tribe Diet Coke faces 5 years in prison

A YouTuber could face up to five years in prison for endangering himself by approaching one of the world’s most secluded tribes and offering them a can of Diet Coke.

In 2025, YouTuber Mykhailo Polyakov journeyed to North Sentinel Island. He had spent months trying to contact the island’s inhabitants, a tribe that has remained isolated for thousands of years.

This content creator regularly travels to dangerous places around the world, including Afghanistan under Taliban rule, and was particularly eager to visit North Sentinel Island.

He spent nine hours adrift at sea on a small inflatable boat to get to the forbidden island. Once there, he signaled to the islanders with a whistle and left them a coconut and a can of Diet Coke as gifts.

Despite sharing his travels online, he was arrested just two days later and now faces a potentially long prison sentence because of it.

As a longtime follower of this story, it’s clear that Indian law is really strict about not contacting the Sentinelese tribe, and officials were seriously worried about what Polyakov was doing – it could have been incredibly dangerous for everyone involved.

Survival International, an organization dedicated to defending the rights of Indigenous communities, strongly criticized the YouTuber’s actions, calling them both dangerous and foolish.

Caroline Pearce, the group’s director, explained that the content creator didn’t just put themselves in danger, but also threatened the well-being of the entire Sentinelese tribe.

He faces charges for trespassing on tribal land that’s off-limits to visitors, and could receive a prison sentence of up to five years if convicted. He is due back in court on April 29th.

Interactions with isolated tribes spark controversy and death

The people of this island hunt with spears, bows, and arrows in the thick forests. They are known for being unfriendly to outsiders and have even violently rejected attempts at contact, an event said to have affected Polyakov.

In 2018, John Allen Chau, a 26-year-old missionary, was killed by arrows after unexpectedly going to a remote island. He apparently believed he was on a religious mission to share his beliefs with the people who lived there.

Rescuers stopped trying to recover John Chau’s body because they worried it would further anger the Sentinelese people, who have chosen to remain isolated.

Two Indian fishermen who strayed too close to the island in 2006 were also killed.

Indian officials rarely contact the tribe, mainly through occasional visits where they leave gifts like bananas. These visits involve small groups of officials and scientists.

Other online personalities have also tried to connect with remote groups for their content. For example, in 2025, an Irish travel influencer gained a lot of attention after posting a video about a potentially dangerous meeting with an isolated tribe in Papua, Indonesia, and controversially called them “cannibals” on TikTok.

I was really disappointed to hear about the Nelk Boys giving vapes and alcohol to a tribe they visited. It just didn’t sit right with me, and a lot of people felt the same way – it seemed super disrespectful and irresponsible.
