The show Beef largely focuses on the tensions created by social class and who is responsible for systemic unfairness, and how they should be held accountable. These questions are now complicated by personal issues within the characters’ relationships, specifically, who is to blame for a failing marriage and how accountability should be handled. The series explores what happens when one partner views the other as a financial benefit, echoing a historical reality where marriage was often a business arrangement. Ashley expresses disbelief when she learns Park and Dr. Kim have a prenuptial agreement, questioning whether the idea of shared assets is genuine or just talk when it comes to finances.
Okay, so things are really tense between Dr. Kim and Chairwoman Park, and it’s clear she’s calling most of the shots with her wealth. The latest episode starts right in the middle of a surgery, and Dr. Kim is still on the phone with Park, who’s asking about filming it – creepy, right? Everyone around him is clearly nervous and nodding that the family did request it, but he straight-up lies to her and says no. She’s so calm, suggesting they just blame any problems on a pre-existing condition and even cancel his surgeries for the day! It’s wild. Only one nurse speaks up, pointing out how suspicious that would look. Then, when another patient comes in, you can see the staff subtly turning the security camera away – they’re trying to protect themselves and Dr. Kim. He acts like he’s going to operate, but as soon as the patient is under anesthesia, he walks out and tells everyone to be careful. It’s like he’s walking a tightrope!
I jumped to the wrong conclusion about Dr. Kim – it turns out his problem isn’t that he’s unqualified, but that his hands aren’t steady enough for surgery. Now, Chairwoman Park has flown back to Seoul to decide what to do next. It’s strange seeing her discuss legal options with her lawyer while Dr. Kim is out on the golf course, swinging the club with surprising skill – I actually recognize his technique from my own game! The lawyer’s solution is just to throw money at the problem – at the staff involved, the media, even to try and influence the autopsy report. Park wants him to funnel the money through her various shell companies, but with her already facing tax evasion accusations, everything she does is under scrutiny. Honestly, though, that’s a separate issue. What Park really needs right now is a real solution.
She’ll be meeting them at the club soon. Right now, Eunice is holding things down at Montecito. She and Austin become quite close during their personal training session, and he seems shaken afterward. He doesn’t tell Ashley that Eunice filled in for Park, instead emphasizing how much he enjoys being a trainer. He even looks terrified when Ashley suggests they try to become friends with Eunice to find out if Austin will get the job. Austin tries to change the subject by looking through a folder Ashley has, revealing a bill for $4,999 addressed to Marta Diaz for “miscellaneous services.” He wonders if “misc.” was actually meant to be a typo for “mist.” Perhaps they could all have lunch at China Bamboo House?
Austin’s naivete provides some comic relief, but he’s far from unintelligent – he’s the one who noticed the unusual payments that exposed Josh’s plan. I really enjoy Charles Melton’s performance, and Austin is one of the most compelling characters in Beef. It’s unclear whether he’s genuinely disturbed by Eunice’s flexibility, leading to his silence at lunch, or if he’s deliberately using information to unsettle Ashley. Regardless, Eunice quickly understands what’s happening. She notices Austin’s reaction when Ashley mentions his session with Park. He tries to stay quiet, but when Ashley brings up Korea, he and Eunice connect over his ignorance of Korean culture – he mistakenly believes Kim Jong-un is in BTS. This is another tactic to make Ashley feel excluded and distrustful.
Let’s revisit the issue of those missing payments. Lindsay and Josh are still excited about their plan, and while remembering a past experience with drugs at an LCD Soundsystem concert, they come up with the idea of turning their barn into a venue for shows. They envision it as a combination bed and breakfast with a concert space. Troy offered to connect them with people in the music industry, and if they submit a few more invoices, they should be able to start renovating. Interestingly, while they struggle to be honest about their argument – threatening someone with a golf club isn’t normal – they openly admit their scheme is actually stealing money. Josh doesn’t feel guilty, reasoning that Park is already planning to hire a new manager and that everyone exaggerates on their invoices anyway. They also have a convenient person to blame: Ashley, whom they dismissively call “an idiot.”
Lindsay and Josh revisit the idea of trying for a baby again, deciding to take a chance instead of considering other options. Josh is unsure at first, but agrees. At that moment, Troy texts, inviting them to a preview event for a new music-focused retreat his friends are setting up in Ojai. Lindsay fears they’ll end up comparing their lives to others and feeling unhappy, but Josh, now hesitant about having unprotected sex, thinks it could be a fun distraction. Carey Mulligan brilliantly portrays Lindsay’s exhaustion and disappointment. Ultimately, their plans rarely come to fruition.
When Josh and Lindsay arrive at the bed and breakfast, Josh is immediately impressed with the potential of the property, and still determined to pursue the barn idea. He’s so focused on the business aspect that he directly asks the owners how much they’ve invested – a surprising $20 million. Combined with the beautiful 100-acre mountain setting, this makes both Josh and Lindsay feel a little intimidated, even though they try not to show it. By evening, everything about the B&B – from the elegant orchids to the free drinks and activities – makes them feel inadequate about their own project. Josh starts to worry if they can realistically pull it off with a smaller budget. Lindsay notices Josh becoming distant again. Luckily, he receives an email from Chairwoman Park scheduling a meeting to discuss his contract, which offers a small bit of relief.
Josh and Lindsay believe renewing Josh’s contract would benefit their bed and breakfast, bringing in more income – enough even for small upgrades like pens in each room. However, this hope is quickly dashed during a Zoom meeting. To understand how Park discovered Josh was stealing money, we need to rewind to a lunch Austin and Ashley had with Eunice. After the lunch, Austin acts strangely, claiming it’s because he’s worried about repercussions from the physical therapy licensing board. Ashley suspects his odd behavior isn’t about wrongdoing, but about his feelings for Eunice, and directly asks if he’s ever dated an Asian woman. Austin awkwardly avoids the question, comparing it to dating his mother, and insists there must be legal ways to work and avoid trouble. It’s understandable why he’s so flustered.
The following day, Austin delivered the gift basket Ashley had made for Eunice while Ashley secretly went into Josh’s office to retrieve the fake certificate. While there, she discovered a strange drawing of kittens and sympathy cards addressed to Marta Lucretia Diaz. At Park’s house, Austin, carrying the gift basket, decided to withdraw his application for the part-time job, but still hoped to find a full-time position at the club. He wondered if they could afford to hire more people if they didn’t spend so much money – $10,000 a week – on fog effects. Eunice explained the concept of having a variety of items and agreed that they should review staffing needs. She also persuaded Austin to reconsider withdrawing his application, as she’d seen his videos and wanted to schedule another session with him – which was exactly what he’d been hoping to hear.
Eunice sends the invoices to the chairwoman. Meanwhile, her lawyer easily uncovers Josh’s plan, but it’s hardly Park’s biggest concern. When Dr. Kim confesses he’s been extremely worried about how to deliver the bribes, Park questions his love for her, wondering why he won’t retire. He’s no longer capable of practicing medicine, and his errors are endangering her and her wealth. Park remains unfazed, but Kim skillfully appeals to her ego. He expresses fear that she’ll leave him—something she’s perfectly capable of doing—and wonders what he would do for money if she did. He can’t afford to retire because his position in the marriage is unstable.
Kim makes her points clearly, but her reasoning feels similar to Ashley’s reaction when she learned about her cyst – a fear of being replaceable. Ashley believed that if she couldn’t give Austin a baby, he’d find someone who could. Kim seems to operate under the same logic. Fortunately for Kim, the chairwoman is devoted to Austin and manages to redirect funds by taking credit for Josh’s plan. While Lindsay overhears, Park reveals to Josh that she knows he’s been sending money to his deceased mother. Josh quickly caves and offers repayment, but the chairwoman wants more: three more years of employment at the club, a non-disclosure agreement, and complete obedience. Later, Josh is seen in his office signing several invoices for $4,999, made out to individuals with Korean names, ostensibly for miscellaneous services.
Austin, unaware of the trouble he’s causing, cheerfully tells Ashley he’s decided not to take the physical therapy job after all – and she agrees it’s a good call! He tries to reassure her about the forged documents and the strange coincidence of Josh’s mother sharing a name with the company on the invoices, saying, “We’re good.” He then silences his phone when he gets a text from Eunice. However, Ashley notices the message and, more importantly, catches Austin glancing lovingly at Eunice during the next staff meeting. During the meeting, Eunice announces that Josh will remain as General Manager, Park is investing $50 million in the club, and, much to Ashley’s shock, Austin will be both the physical therapist and in charge of turning the gym into a modern wellness center.
Ashley is starting to feel excluded and doesn’t trust what’s happening. She’s particularly puzzled by the hiring of an inexperienced man who previously withdrew his application to manage a costly project. Austin defends the decision, suggesting he’s simply qualified, but Ashley suspects something else is going on – maybe even embezzlement by the Korean investors. Austin gets frustrated, asking why she can’t be happy for him, a fair point considering his own secretive behavior. Ashley directly asks Austin if he has feelings for Eunice. He either can’t or won’t lie, and Ashley realizes he’s mirroring a tactic – first used on her by Chairwoman Park, and then by her on Josh – of subtly asserting dominance. Austin confesses he’s attracted to Eunice and admits the close proximity to so many Korean colleagues is disorienting. Stunned, Ashley quickly checks Instagram and discovers she followed Eunice, who never reciprocated, but Austin does follow her. Overwhelmed and convinced Austin is going to abandon her, Ashley impulsively jumps out of the moving car, claiming she’s just trying to calm down. Lost in her panic, she trips and falls down a steep embankment into a creek.
To Add Insult to Injury
Lindsay’s deal with Woosh falls apart when Dr. Kim unexpectedly retires. It seems the chairwoman pressured him to retire by offering financial support if he stopped working. This is a setback for Lindsay, who had proposed a partnership with Woosh where she’d earn a commission for bringing him new clients. Woosh is still upset about her previous attempt to blackmail him and sarcastically suggests she join a senior league. Later, while Lindsay is relaxing with a red-light therapy mask and researching loan options despite being deeply in debt, Desmond cancels their plans for the next month. She then discovers online that he’s seeing someone else. Looking at her reflection, Lindsay feels a connection to her younger self and decides to move forward with a backup plan.
Dr. Kim’s patient confessed to eating before surgery, a potentially life-threatening mistake. If this patient experiences complications during the procedure, the situation could become even more critical.
All three main couples in the story share a common trait: they all deceive themselves to avoid facing difficult truths about their relationships – minimizing arguments, denying wrongdoing, or ignoring serious issues. This self-deception is often a way to try and hold a marriage together, but it’s unclear which of these couples will ultimately fall apart and which will become more resilient after confronting their problems, as Lindsay might put it.
While Charles Melton and Carey Mulligan stand out, what’s truly impressive is how strong every single actor is in this show. Oscar Isaac is captivating, shifting between intense energy and confident leadership, and Cailee Spaeny perfectly balances innocence with a determined spirit. Plus, Youn Yuh-jung and Song Kang-ho have wonderful chemistry, and Seoyeon Jang is quietly magnetic. It’s a remarkably talented cast overall!
