I’m so excited – they’ve officially started filming the Superman sequel! Even before it’s finished, we’re already getting little hints about what to expect, and it sounds amazing. Knowing James Gunn is writing and directing again gives me so much confidence that it’ll be a truly thrilling movie, and one that really means something. I can’t wait!
The upcoming Superman sequel is poised to build a vast and interconnected universe of heroes and villains, with storylines planned for many years. Here’s everything confirmed as filming begins.
What Is Man of Tomorrow About?
Okay, so here’s the scoop on the new Superman movie. It’s not Superman 2 exactly, which is kinda interesting. James Gunn is calling it Man of Tomorrow, and it’s going to be a real focus on both Superman – played by David Corenswet – and Lex Luthor, with Nicholas Hoult playing the villain. Think of it as a story where both of them are equally important. It is part of the bigger “Superman Saga” Gunn is building for the DCU, but don’t go in expecting it to pick up right after the first movie. It’s more of a companion piece, telling its own story within that larger universe.
The upcoming film, Man of Tomorrow, will feature Superman and Lex Luthor teaming up despite their long-standing rivalry. They’ll have to work together to defend Earth from a huge alien invasion. Early artwork hints that Lex Luthor will build his iconic Power Suit, seen in the comics, to battle the villain Brainiac. The film will also include other DC superheroes – some familiar, and some new to audiences – who will join Superman and Lex in protecting the planet.
Several superheroes will appear in Man of Tomorrow, sparking speculation that the movie will lay the groundwork for the long-awaited Justice League team. While not officially confirmed, Superman has already taken steps to assemble the heroes and even showcased their future headquarters, the Hall of Justice. Many believe the Justice League’s debut in the DC Universe is close, and Man of Tomorrow seems like the ideal starting point for a new chapter for the team.
Before seeing Man of Tomorrow, it’s best to watch Superman first, as it introduces key characters and storylines that will continue in the 2027 sequel. Also, Season 2 of HBO Max’s Peacemaker will explain how Lex Luthor and his team redeem themselves after the events of Superman. Keep an eye out for clues about Man of Tomorrow in other upcoming projects, especially the new HBO Max series Lanterns, premiering this August.
Who Stars in Man of Tomorrow?
Okay, so I’ve seen the cast list for the new Superman movie, and honestly, it’s the most exciting thing to come out of the DC Universe so far! David Corenswet is stepping into the iconic role of Superman, and Nicholas Hoult? Perfect casting as Lex Luthor, in my opinion. But it doesn’t stop there – Rachel Brosnahan will be Lois Lane, and we’ve got Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. Plus, Frank Grillo, Sara Sampaio, and María Gabriela de Faría are joining the mix with some seriously interesting roles. It sounds like a lot of familiar faces, like Wendell Pierce as Perry White and Terence Rosemore, might be back too, which is fantastic. This cast really feels like it could bring a fresh, but respectful, take on these classic characters.
Lars Eidinger is joining the cast of Man of Tomorrow as Brainiac, the film’s primary villain. There’s also been speculation about another key role, with many believing the character Maxima would appear. However, rumors suggest the Maxima reports were a deliberate distraction to conceal the casting of Arjona as Wonder Woman, though this hasn’t been officially confirmed.
The upcoming film, Man of Tomorrow, will showcase the biggest gathering of DC Universe superheroes ever assembled. Alongside David Corenswet as Superman, Isabela Merced will return as Hawkgirl, following her solo movie this June. Aaron Pierre will also appear as Green Lantern, having first played the character in the new HBO Max series, Lanterns, which premieres later this year.
As production on Man of Tomorrow begins, we can expect more actors to be announced for the film. James Gunn and the team at DC Studios will likely keep some character reveals under wraps, but rumors suggest we might see Batman make his first appearance in the DC Universe, along with Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and John Cena reprising his role as Peacemaker – potentially in a significant capacity.
When Will Man of Tomorrow Be Released?
The new movie, Man of Tomorrow, is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 9, 2027. The announcement came just months after Superman premiered in 2025, giving DCU a solid plan for future films. Filming began this week and is expected to continue throughout the summer. Currently, the production is progressing as planned.
Before the highly anticipated Man of Tomorrow arrives, DC fans have several projects to look forward to. First up is Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El in her first solo movie since 1984, charting her path to becoming a superhero like her cousin. Following that, the HBO Max series Lanterns is slated for an August premiere, and will expand the world of the Green Lanterns, featuring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart.
Clayface is an upcoming horror film focusing on the Batman villain of the same name. Starring Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, the movie tells the story of an actor whose face is permanently scarred after an attack. Set to release on October 23, 2026, it will be the first R-rated installment in the DC Universe and promises a deeper look at Gotham City. While it’s possible the DCU’s Batman will appear, James Gunn hasn’t confirmed this yet.
Currently planned to debut in 2027, Man of Tomorrow will kick off the new DC Universe (DCU) film and television franchise. Though future projects beyond this initial release aren’t confirmed, it’s likely we’ll see plenty more DCU heroes on screen after its launch. Several other DCU projects are in development, including a second season of Creature Commandos, a Batman movie called The Brave and the Bold, a new Wonder Woman film, and a series about Amanda Waller for HBO Max.
The DC Universe’s future is promising, with the upcoming Man of Tomorrow poised to begin a fresh chapter filled with powerful heroes and villains.
