Disney recently conducted mass layoffs and, in a particularly striking instance, fired a Marvel concept artist in the same room featuring a mural he created for the Loki television series.
Disney recently announced layoffs impacting 1,000 employees. Josh D’Amaro, who recently became Disney’s CEO after Bob Iger, explained in a company memo that these cuts are part of an effort to make the company run more efficiently.
Marvel has experienced significant layoffs affecting many areas of the company, including its film and television departments, comic book division, legal teams, and, notably, almost the entire visual development team at Marvel Studios. This team is responsible for creating the designs and costumes for all the characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It’s pretty rough, but I heard they let go of concept artist Wesley Burt, and get this – they fired him in a room full of his own artwork he’d made for that Marvel show on Disney+! Can you believe that? It just feels…wrong, you know?
Wesley Burt posts about the “irony” of Disney firing him from Marvel next to his Loki art
After Disney announced layoffs, Wesley Burt shared on X that he was among those let go – and in a particularly striking setting: the room he was dismissed in featured a mural of his own artwork on one of the walls.
He jokingly pointed out the irony of being laid off in a conference room decorated with a mural of Loki. The artwork shows a collage of characters surrounding Tom Hiddleston’s version of the mischievous god, set within the Time Variance Authority.

Burt contributed design work to the Loki series, creating concepts for both Loki and Sylvie (played by Sophia Di Martino). He’s a highly skilled concept artist for Marvel, and his online portfolio reveals his involvement in other recent projects. Notably, he designed the Silver Surfer riding a neutron star for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and also developed visuals demonstrating Sue Storm’s abilities.
He contributed to the visual development of several Marvel characters and upcoming films, including designing Henry Cavill’s potential appearance as Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine, and creating concept art for Channing Tatum’s Gambit and Wesley Snipes’ Blade.
As of today, Burt’s post on X has been viewed over four million times, and Marvel fans have responded with hundreds of messages of support. One fan wrote, “This is honestly one of the worst things I’ve ever seen happen to someone I know. I’m so sorry.” Another added, “I’m really sorry to see this. It’s a huge letdown and embarrassing for them.”
