The MCU Is Closer Than Ever To A Live-Action Into The Spider-Verse

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 5.

Sony’s animated Spider-Verse films have become incredibly popular, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe seems to be moving closer to adapting those stories into live-action. The upcoming series Daredevil: Born Again, which shares a similar setting with Spider-Man, suggests that the kind of world we saw in the Spider-Verse movies might be happening soon.

Despite all the exciting things happening within the Multiverse Saga, a crossover between Sony’s Spider-Man universe and Marvel Studios’ Marvel Cinematic Universe still seems unlikely. The two studios have a complicated relationship, making a team-up feel more like wishful thinking than a real plan. However, the new Daredevil: Born Again series suggests that a crossover might actually be possible.

The MCU Has Never Been Closer To The Spider-Verse

Although Spider-Man: No Way Home brought together different versions of Spider-Man from alternate universes, the larger Marvel story arc hasn’t really delved into the idea of the multiverse beyond a few isolated cases, like The Fantastic Four: First Steps. However, the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series seems to be taking a similar approach to exploring alternate realities as the Spider-Verse films.

The Spider-Verse movies introduce a powerful and wealthy Wilson Fisk, but he’s also a man who’s lost his moral compass. This is because, before the events of the films, Fisk lost his wife, Vanessa, and their son, Richard. A flashback reveals that Fisk’s criminal behavior unintentionally caused Vanessa’s death, leaving him with nothing to keep him in check.

With Wilson now grieving his wife in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he might follow a storyline similar to the one seen in the Spider-Verse movies. This is especially likely since the MCU has already established the Multiverse, allowing for travel between dimensions and the introduction of different versions of heroes like Spider-Man.

Daredevil: Born Again Referenced Multiple Worlds

The new series Daredevil: Born Again featured a compelling exchange between Vanessa Fisk and her husband, Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin. During a discussion about their future, Vanessa playfully asked Wilson how many worlds he wanted to rule. True to his character, Fisk responded by asking, “How many are there?”

Although it appears for just a moment during a private conversation between Vanessa and Wilson, the inclusion of this line is noteworthy given that Marvel’s Multiverse Saga is already in progress. It’s possible Fisk will discover the existence of the multiverse and could even be recruited by a stronger villain, like Doctor Doom, before the events leading to Avengers: Secret Wars and the expected Battleworld storyline.

Even though legal and copyright concerns limit what Marvel can do with these characters, creating a live-action Spider-Verse adaptation is now more achievable than ever before.

The MCU Still Needs To Introduce It’s Miles Morales

To truly tell this story, the Marvel Cinematic Universe would need to introduce its own version of Miles Morales, which seems difficult right now. However, Marvel Studios hinted at the possibility as early as the film Spider-Man: Homecoming.

The movie features a quick scene where Peter Parker encounters Aaron Davis, portrayed by Donald Glover. Davis is Miles Morales’ uncle, and he references his nephew during their interaction, suggesting that Miles Morales already exists within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Even though there’s a lot of excitement, the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t introduced Spider-Man (Miles Morales) yet, and we don’t know how he’ll get his powers or when his story will begin. Still, it’s encouraging to see that the Daredevil: Born Again series seems to be setting the stage for a potential Spider-Verse storyline within the MCU.
