Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the ninth episode of the Scrubs revival, titled “My Celebration.” The season finale brings back a familiar face from the original series, and their return includes a clever and humorous twist. However, this character has a history of tricking people just for fun, so I believe the big reveal isn’t entirely truthful. While there might be a bit of honesty in it, it’s best to view the finale’s final confession with skepticism.
Neil Flynn was known for his hilarious role as the Janitor throughout the original nine seasons of Scrubs, though he only made a quick appearance in the Season 9 premiere. When Scrubs briefly continued with Med School, Flynn chose to star in The Middle instead. Now that Season 9 is considered separate from the main Scrubs storyline, the last time we officially saw the Janitor was in the 2009 series finale, which provided a satisfying conclusion. Fans have long hoped for his return, and the revival finally delivered with “My Celebration.” Thankfully, it feels like no time has passed at all for his character.
There’s No Way Maintenance Guy Is Actually the Janitor’s Son

Darcy Michael is back as the building’s maintenance worker in “My Celebration,” after being absent for a few episodes. When he was first introduced, JD was thrilled to have such a friendly and helpful replacement for the Janitor. However, in a surprising twist at the end of the episode, the Janitor reveals that Michael’s character is actually his son, Janitor Jr. While the characters’ ages could technically make this possible, it seems highly unlikely.
The Janitor is a notorious liar; it’s a defining characteristic of his personality. Almost everything he says is fabricated, exaggerated, or simply untrue. While he occasionally lets a truth slip out, it’s always buried within so many lies that it’s hard to know what’s real about him and what’s just part of the persona he’s carefully created. For example, even when he mentioned having a son in the original Scrubs series, it always felt like another one of his many falsehoods.
In the episode “My First Step,” the Janitor says he missed his son Timmy’s school play because of JD. Let’s assume he’s telling the truth. This means the Maintenance Guy couldn’t be his son, as Michael’s character would have been too old for school plays even twenty years prior. This raises the question of why the Janitor’s “son” is pretending to be younger. The original series offers clues, allowing us to make a strong educated guess. The Janitor is remarkably good at getting people to participate in his plans, and it’s easy to overlook his intelligence and ability to lead, as he often hides it behind odd and funny behavior.
The Janitor is a captivating and unpredictable character who enjoys tormenting JD, which constantly challenges JD’s mental state. It would fit perfectly with the Janitor’s mischievous personality if he enlisted Maintenance Guy to help with his schemes. It’s easy to picture the Janitor manipulating Maintenance Guy by asking him to pretend to be his son just to bother JD, and Michael would likely play along without question. In fact, it wouldn’t be surprising if Maintenance Guy’s whole friendship with JD was just a carefully constructed performance.
I Also Doubt the Janitor’s New Job Is Real

I’m not entirely sure about this, but I suspect the Janitor isn’t actually employed by the Joint Commission. While the organization is real and does what he claims in “My Celebration,” he doesn’t seem like the right person for such a serious job. Even when he was the head custodian at Sacred Heart, he famously slacked off – it was a constant joke. He’d also refuse to clean certain areas if he felt mistreated by people working there, and often spent his time bothering JD and the others.
It’s hard to believe the Janitor’s claims about his new job. The only evidence is Flynn answering the phone when JD calls the Joint Commission, and a surprisingly insightful comment he made about open containers in the hospital. But those moments aren’t enough to convince me he’s actually changed careers. I suspect he found out JD was returning to Sacred Heart and is simply trying to torment him again. Instead of just going back to being the regular Janitor, he’s pretending to have authority over JD, even though JD is now Chief of Medicine. That’s exactly the kind of thing the Janitor would do, and I’m excited to see where Scrubs goes with this if the show gets renewed.
