Will And Grace Creator Reacts To Hulu’s Mid-Century Modern Getting Canceled After One Season

The 2025 TV lineup includes both returning shows and fresh faces, like the new comedy Mid-Century Modern. Available to stream with a Hulu subscription, this series-which has been compared to The Golden Girls-debuted in March and stars Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer, and Nathan Lee Graham as three close gay friends sharing a home. Despite generating a lot of excitement and positive response from the LGBTQ+ community, Hulu canceled the show after just one season. Now, one of the show’s creators-who also created Will & Grace-is sharing their thoughts on the cancellation.

It was announced on Monday that Mid-Century Modern is officially done, six months after it premiered on Hulu. While it has an 88% approval rating and 80% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, that didn’t seem to matter, nor did having Will & Grace creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan helming the comedy. Mutchnick took to Instagram to confirm with a short but sweet message that the “special show” is done.

Mutchnick was correct – ten episodes simply weren’t enough, and despite having a talented cast and experienced creators, it wasn’t enough to save the show. It’s uncertain if this Hulu original series will be picked up by another network, but it doesn’t seem likely. The reason for the cancellation is unclear; the show received generally positive reviews and was well-received, but unfortunately, many shows are canceled after just one season, regardless of their popularity. It’s a tough situation, but that seems to be the trend. Hopefully, the cast and creators will find new projects soon.

It’s really unexpected that Mid-Century Modern wasn’t renewed for another season, especially since Will & Grace is considered one of the greatest sitcoms ever made. Considering both shows came from the same creators and Mid-Century even had a similar feel to W&G, it seemed like a sure hit. But it looks like some shows just aren’t meant to last, no matter how good they are.

In other news, Mid-Century Modern is the most recent show to be canceled in 2025. It’s joining other series from Hulu – The Handmaid’s Tale, Solar Opposites, and How to Die Alone – which are either finishing up this year or have been outright canceled. The growing list of shows canceled in 2025 also includes Doctor Odyssey, Grosse Pointe Garden Society, Bel-Air, 9-1-1: Lone Star, Alert: Missing Persons Unit, Bookie, The Cleaning Lady, and Cruel Intentions, among many others.

It’s always disappointing when a show gets canceled, particularly one with a lot of promise. As a fan of Mid-Century Modern, I’m really sad to see it go and was hoping it would be renewed. Thankfully, this probably isn’t the last we’ll see from Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, so fans can hopefully anticipate more projects from them down the line, if they continue to create. In the meantime, viewers can revisit Mid-Century’s 10 episodes on Hulu and understand why so many people wanted more.
