Dead Villain Returns as The Boys Reveals Whose Voice Homelander Was Hearing

In Season 5, Episode 3 of The Boys, a character from the past reappears, explaining the mysterious voice Homelander heard earlier. This person played a key role in forming Homelander’s troubled personality and driving his actions, making their return particularly relevant as he spirals further into darkness and instability.

Elisabeth Shue’s Madelyn Stilwell returns in The Boys Season 5

In the opening moments of The Boys Season 5, Episode 2, titled “Teenage Kix,” Homelander experiences a vision while at A-Train’s funeral. He’s overcome by the influence of “Oh Father,” and a bright light shines on his face as he hears a calming woman’s voice affectionately call him, “My sweet boy.”

In the third episode, we learn who has been speaking to him in his head. He remembers hearing Soldier Boy call him a “disappointment” during the season finale while looking at Soldier Boy’s containment unit. This triggers a flood of memories – harsh words and insults from Stan Edgar, his own self-doubt, and A-Train – ultimately leading to an emotional breakdown.

It was a really intense scene! After getting knocked down, the character started hallucinating, thinking he was seeing the gates of heaven, which completely freaked him out. Then, things got even more twisted – he started seeing an angelic version of Madelyn, the woman he killed back in Season 1 because she hadn’t been truthful about his son. It was a powerful moment, bringing back all that past trauma.

He weakly called out, then started to cry, and she gently called him “sweet boy.” Madelyn, using her illusion, asked Homelander what was bothering him and why he seemed so unhappy. He explained that he was struggling with problems involving Soldier Boy and Ryan, and felt like everything in his life was falling apart.

“That’s right, this was meant to happen,” she said, explaining that everything he’d been through was part of a larger plan. Madelyn continued, telling him he was destined for greatness and would become a god adored by all. She even claimed he was more beloved than Jesus, pointing out he’d saved more people and urging him to be ruthless when dealing with his enemies.

After coming out of his delusion, Madelyn informs Homelander he has “one last thing to do,” and he responds by happily licking her hand and moaning. New episodes of The Boys Season 5 will be released every Wednesday.
