‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Season 2 Filming Shuts Down After Flooding

Following the success of House of the Dragon, HBO’s second Game of Thrones spin-off is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The show launched earlier this year to widespread praise, particularly for the strong connection between its two main actors and its touching storyline. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been noted for its impressive scope and nuanced storytelling, but fans will have to wait before the next season arrives.

It’s a bit surprising, but production on Season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been put on hold. One of the things that set this series apart from Game of Thrones was how quickly and efficiently it was made. Showrunner Ira Parker has often discussed the Hedge Knight novellas by George R.R. Martin – three have been published so far. The team’s goal is to create a season for each novella, aiming for one season per year. This would allow them to stay true to the original stories and continue using actor Dexter Sol Ansell, who closely resembles the character Egg at his current age.

Filming for Season 2 started in Belfast, Ireland, and then moved to Gran Canaria, Spain, because the landscape there best fit the story, called “The Sworn Sword.” The season’s plot revolves around a severe drought affecting the Seven Kingdoms. Ironically, production had to be stopped and ultimately canceled when Gran Canaria experienced unusually heavy rainfall – the most they’d seen in 15 years. This was especially unfortunate because the sets, designed to depict a drought-stricken land, were actually flooded.

It’s still unclear when Season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be released. While there was hope for a premiere around the same time as Season 1, the recent flooding and damage to the show’s sets might cause a delay. Delays between seasons are common for TV shows, but A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was potentially on track for a quicker return, making this situation particularly frustrating for fans.

The show hasn’t been cancelled completely, and a new season is still expected to arrive around 2027. As of now, there haven’t been any further updates about the production’s plans. It’s unclear whether HBO will choose to film in a different location or wait for improved conditions in Spain. Hopefully, the team working on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms can find a way to film effectively despite the current challenges.
