Air New Zealand is making long flights more comfortable for economy class passengers. They’re introducing a new option that lets people lie flat and sleep, even without paying for an upgrade.
The airline announced that reservations for its new SkyNest sleep pods will be available starting May 18th. These pods will debut on the airline’s updated Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner planes beginning in November 2026.
The “Economy SkyNest,” created for long-haul flights, offers passengers a new feature in standard cabins: extra legroom to stretch out and get comfortable!
The sleeping area features six pods arranged in three tiers, located between the standard and upgraded seating sections.
New sleeping pods aim to fix long-haul hell
Each private pod includes everything you need for a comfortable rest: a full-size mattress, a privacy curtain, relaxing lighting, ventilation, and charging ports. Fresh bedding is provided after each use, and guests also receive a small comfort kit with items like an eye mask, socks, and skincare products.
Passengers traveling in economy or premium economy can now book a four-hour sleep session during their flight. Initially, each flight will have two available sessions. The cost starts at $495 New Zealand dollars (about $292 US dollars), offering a comfortable way to rest without needing to upgrade your ticket.
Getting to New Zealand takes a long time because it’s so far away, but that travel is important for the country’s tourism industry, which is worth $46 billion NZD. According to Air New Zealand CEO Nikhil Ravishankar, continued growth relies on people being willing to make that long journey.

Skynest aims to simplify long flights. It’s a uniquely practical design, typical of New Zealand innovation, that focuses on improving passenger comfort. By allowing more travelers to get real rest on very long journeys, Skynest makes traveling to and from New Zealand easier.
Okay, so I’m planning this massive trip to New Zealand – like, over 17 hours of travel! – because I’m a huge Lord of the Rings fan and want to really experience everything. I’m thinking I should check out those new sleeping pods at the airport to make sure I’m totally rested before I start my adventure. Gotta be at my best to explore Middle-earth, right?
