The announcement that Jamie Dornan will star in ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ has received a varied response from fans online. The casting reveal at CinemaCon 2026 has led to a lot of discussion and comparisons to other actors.
What Lord of the Rings fans are saying about Jamie Dornan’s Aragorn casting
The announcement that Jamie Dornan will play Aragorn (known as Strider) in the upcoming film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, has sparked mixed reactions from fans. Warner Bros. revealed the casting at CinemaCon 2026, also announcing Leo Woodall will play the character Halvard. Dornan will be portraying Aragorn as a younger man.
Viggo Mortensen famously played Aragorn in Peter Jackson’s three Lord of the Rings films, and his performance is still loved by fans worldwide. The recent announcement that another actor will take on the role has quickly led to strong reactions online.
Fans on X (formerly Twitter) reacted with excitement to the news. One person called it “huge” and expressed their anticipation for Jamie Dornan’s role. Another praised Dornan as a “great actor,” calling the casting a success. A third fan jokingly admitted to becoming a Lord of the Rings fan, and quickly checked their old tweets about a different role Dornan played – Christian Grey.
As a huge fan of the movies, I was seeing a lot of strong reactions online when people started talking about recasting Aragorn. Seriously, some folks were not happy! One person actually wrote, “How dare anyone replace Viggo!” Another just said, “Viggo is the only Aragorn for me.” And honestly, a lot of us figured casting Jamie Dornan would really split the fanbase – and it definitely seemed like people had strong opinions!
The movie centers on Aragorn’s mission to find Gollum before Sauron can discover where the Ring is hidden. Andy Serkis will once again play Gollum, and he’s also directing the film. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens are producing it.
This new story is set in the world of Middle-earth, falling between the events of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, and expands on details found in the appendices of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work. Kate Winslet joins the cast as a character named Marigol, while Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen reprise their roles as Frodo and Gandalf.
