Filming for Season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been temporarily halted due to severe weather. The HBO series, a prequel to Game of Thrones, had to stop production at an overseas location after the weather damaged parts of the set.
Storm Therese reportedly cancels A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 filming
As a huge fan of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,’ I was really disappointed to hear that filming for Season 2 has been temporarily paused. Apparently, the recent storm, Therese, caused some serious flooding at their location in Gran Canaria, right at the Las Niñas Dam where they were building sets. Thankfully, everyone is safe, and I’ve heard they’ve already moved the production to mainland Spain to keep things moving. I’m just glad the crew is okay and eager to see them back up and running!
Recent heavy rainfall – the worst the area has seen in 15 years – caused water levels at the dam to rise significantly. As a result, the film production company left Gran Canaria, where they had a confirmed booking to film from February 23rd to May 15th, according to Environment Minister Raul Garcia Brink.
For scenes of dry, desolate lands in the show, HBO chose the Canary Islands, drawing inspiration from the books by George R.R. Martin. While filming began in Belfast, Ireland, the production moved to Gran Canaria because of its rough and rocky environment. Spain has been an important location for Game of Thrones since season five.
The team is preparing a detailed plan to remove the underwater set. Once the water level goes down enough to safely reach the location, the removal work will begin. As part of environmental restoration, they’ve already planted 50 Canary Island pine trees and made other improvements to the surrounding forest.
According to reports, the production team had finished most of the filming before the storm hit. They were originally planning to finish shooting by June 2026 and aimed to release the show in 2027. The reopening of a nearby campsite on April 11th was the first indication that filming had been paused. HBO hasn’t made any official statements about the storm’s impact or if the release date will be affected.
Ira Parker, the creator of the show, has discussed plans for it to potentially last 12 to 15 seasons, adapting the stories from George R.R. Martin’s ‘Hedge Knight’ series. The first season was a hit for HBO, averaging over 24 million viewers per episode and receiving a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 currently streams on Max.
