The movie currently has a working title and will center around a well-known period in Westeros’ history.
Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest prequel movie officially in works
The studio has tentatively titled the new movie Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, though they note the title could change. This movie is confirmed as part of Warner Bros.’ plans for future releases starting in 2027. It represents a significant expansion of the Game of Thrones universe, which has been hugely popular with the original series and the House of the Dragon prequel.
We first heard about a Game of Thrones movie last month, but a recent presentation gave us a clearer idea of what it will be about. The film will focus on Aegon I Targaryen, the first Targaryen king who conquered Westeros. Book readers will know this story from George R.R. Martin’s book, Fire and Blood, which tells the tale of how the Targaryen dynasty rose to power – including their victories and setbacks.
Aegon I was a powerful and determined leader who first united the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. He famously forged the Iron Throne from the melted swords of those he conquered. He ruled with his two sister-wives and queens, Visenya and Rhaenys, and their family went on to rule for many generations.
The project has a strong creative team behind it. Beau Willimon, known for his work as showrunner on Netflix’s House of Cards and, more recently, as a writer for the Disney+ series Andor, will be writing Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest.
As the world of Game of Thrones continues on TV with the success of shows like House of the Dragon, a major announcement has been made. HBO is preparing for the third season of House of the Dragon and has already renewed the latest prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, for a second season.
