Fans believe a new character introduced in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hints at the possible appearance of Wario in a sequel. The movie’s post-credits scene features Princess Daisy, suggesting she could play a significant role in a future Mario film.
The post-credits scene introduces Princess Daisy, but doesn’t reveal how she’ll become involved with the story’s main characters. We simply see her arrive at the Gateway Galaxy and prevent a Ukkiki from stealing something.
Given that the Gateway Galaxy seems to be a way to travel between worlds, it’s possible Princess Daisy is leaving her home and will appear as a visitor in the next Super Mario movie, entering the story in the Mushroom Kingdom.
Because Princess Daisy lives in a different world than the Mushroom Kingdom, her involvement makes logical sense. This also supports a theory about what a future game might be about, and which other characters could appear.
What Princess Daisy’s Debut May Reveal About A Third Super Mario Movie
The possible appearance of Princess Daisy in the next game suggests it might be based on Super Mario Land. This game not only introduced Daisy, but it’s the only main Super Mario title where she plays a crucial role in the story. The original 1989 Game Boy game follows Mario on an adventure to Sarasaland, a kingdom ruled by Princess Daisy.
In Super Mario Land, Mario’s mission is to rescue Princess Daisy from Tatanga, a purple alien who has taken over the land of Sarasaland. Tatanga arrived in a UFO and has control of the four kingdoms within Sarasaland, so Mario must travel across them, disrupt Tatanga’s power, and eventually defeat him in a showdown.
Even though the creators of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and a potential Super Mario Galaxy Movie drew ideas from many different games, they surprisingly didn’t heavily feature Super Mario Land – only including a few small references. This might suggest they’re saving the game’s story for a future movie, and the recent addition of Princess Daisy makes that possibility even stronger.
As a huge fan, I’m really hoping we see Daisy head to the Mushroom Kingdom! Even though she’s currently stuck as a prisoner in Super Mario Land, I think it would be awesome if they followed the example set by The Super Mario Bros. Movie. They cleverly moved away from the classic ‘damsel in distress’ storyline with Peach, and it would be fantastic if they did the same for Daisy in a sequel – letting her be a strong character who saves herself!
The story of Super Mario Land could be changed so that Daisy asks Peach for help rescuing Sarasaland.
How Wario Would Tie Into A Super Mario Land Adaptation
Okay, so Super Mario Land doesn’t actually feature Wario, which is a bit surprising given how iconic he is now. But the game does set the stage for his eventual arrival, I think. The whole plot involving Mario and Tatanga fighting over Princess Daisy? That’s precisely what led to Wario being created in the first place, so it feels like a crucial stepping stone. It’s fascinating to see how these early games subtly laid the groundwork for characters we now can’t imagine the Mario universe without.
The 1992 game Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins introduced Wario as the villain. The game reveals that Mario’s previous journey to Sarasaland left his home open to being taken over by Wario, who now serves as Mario’s main rival and the antagonist he must defeat.
Considering how the first movie blended storylines and key events from various Mario games, it’s likely a sequel to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie could do the same with Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2.
As a huge fan, I’ve always thought it would be amazing to see a Mario game where things are happening on multiple fronts. Imagine Mario and Luigi off rescuing Princess Daisy in Sarasaland from Tatanga – or whoever the bad guy is over there – while back home in the Mushroom Kingdom, the folks left behind have to deal with Wario taking advantage of the situation. It’d be a really interesting way to expand the Mario universe, seeing how everyone copes when they’re on their own!
