Robert Downey Jr. is creating a new series for Prime Video that draws inspiration from two popular shows originally released on competing streaming platforms. He’s collaborating with Anthony Michael Hall, a former co-star, for the first time in many years. The series is anticipated to be as critically acclaimed as HBO’s hit show, Succession.
This project has been in development for nearly a decade and now includes Brad Falchuk, a co-creator and writer known for some of the most popular episodes of American Horror Story. Robert Downey Jr. and Anthony Michael Hall were first reported to be involved way back in November 2016, according to The Wrap.
The upcoming Prime Video show will be called Singularity, a title recently confirmed by Hall as late as 2025. This project will bring Robert Downey Jr. back to television after his highly praised work playing multiple characters in HBO’s 2024 historical thriller, The Sympathizer.
RDJ’s Singularity Will Be A Sci-Fi Series With Similarities To Succession
While the story details of Singularity haven’t been released yet, the title itself tells us it will be a science fiction show. In science, “singularity” usually describes a point where our understanding of physics breaks down.
However, the term ‘singularity’ is often used in science fiction shows and movies to describe the point when AI becomes more conscious than humans. If the upcoming Prime Video show starring Robert Downey Jr. is about this kind of singularity, it will likely be similar in style to shows like Westworld and Altered Carbon.
In a 2025 interview with Decider, Anthony Michael Hall, co-creator of Singularity, explained why the show’s development was taking time. He said he and Robert Downey Jr. realized the initial plot was too similar to the HBO series Succession to feel unique and original.
HBO’s sharpest drama centers on a powerful family who control a major media company, mirroring the real-life conflicts within the Murdoch family. While firmly rooted in reality, the show’s themes of family drama and power struggles could easily translate to a science fiction story, proving how universal its core message is.
American Horror Story Creator Brad Falchuk Is Rewriting Singularity
Robert Downey Jr. and Anthony Michael Hall realized their project, Singularity, was becoming too similar to the show Succession. To address this, they brought in experienced writer and creator Brad Falchuk. It’s currently unclear if the series will now take a completely new path or still share some similarities with the popular HBO drama.
Ryan Falchuk, famous for creating shows like American Horror Story and Glee, is now collaborating with M. Night Shyamalan on a new TV series called Magic 8 Ball. They’re both leading the show as showrunners, and Falchuk wrote the first episode.
Now that the first season of Magic 8 Ball is finished, Ryan Falchuk will likely focus on Singularity for Prime Video. Considering he wrote the American Horror Story episode “Daphne,” which explored the dangers of AI becoming too powerful, he’s a great fit to write a whole series on the topic.
The upcoming series, Singularity, will be Robert Downey Jr.’s first time directing, and features writing by Brad Falchuk. Downey Jr. and Anthony Michael Hall will both appear in the show. With this talented team involved, it’s a project to look forward to. Now, fans are waiting for Prime Video to announce when production will begin.
