The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender animators speak out after movie leaks online

Someone who helped create the movie The Last Airbender shared their reaction after the full film appeared online without authorization.

The new movie was originally planned to be released in theaters on October 9, 2026, and then become available on Paramount+. However, Paramount decided to release it directly on Paramount+ instead, which upset many of the show’s dedicated fans.

Fans were deeply upset by the news and over 40,000 signed a petition hoping to bring the movie back to cinemas, but Paramount hasn’t responded to their request yet.

The full animated movie was leaked online in April 2026, spreading quickly across social media platforms like X and Facebook. The person who initially leaked it claimed Nickelodeon mistakenly emailed them the file. The post on X stayed online for almost 12 hours before being removed due to copyright concerns.

A leak of the film online has caused a lot of discussion. Now, one of the animators who worked on it is asking fans not to pirate it, and to wait for the official streaming release.

The Legend of Aang animators speak out against piracy

Julia Schoel is a skilled animator with credits on popular projects like the indie series ‘Lackadaisy’ and ‘Helluva Boss,’ as well as the short film ‘The Legend of Pipi.’

Schoel recently worked as a Senior 2D Animator on The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, where they turned storyboards into initial animations, specializing in making characters feel realistic and expressive.

Man, we poured years of work into the Aang movie, really hoping to finally see it celebrated in theaters. It was a huge blow to see it leaked online and have screenshots from our scenes just floating around on Twitter like everyone was collecting candy. It felt incredibly disrespectful after all the effort we put in.

It bothers me to see people using Paramount’s choice to pull the movie from cinemas as an excuse to illegally download it. While I get why some don’t want to pay for or support Paramount+, pirating it after it was released would have been a better option than this. It’s really disrespectful to all the effort the creators put into making the film.

We spent years creating the ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ movie, hoping to share it with everyone in theaters. It was incredibly disheartening to see the film leaked online and clips circulating on Twitter without our permission. (1/3)

Anna Gong, one of the film’s background artists, shared her reaction to the leak after someone asked about it.

She confessed it was a really difficult experience. She explained the movie looks great because everyone involved was deeply passionate about creating something special for Avatar: The Last Airbender fans. She hopes people will support the official release so they can create more films like it.

Honestly, it’s a little heartbreaking seeing everything unfold. The movie looks amazing, and it’s clear everyone poured their hearts into making something special for Avatar: The Last Airbender fans. I really hope people support the official release so we can get even more movies in the future! It would mean the world.

Paramount hasn’t commented on the leak, but the film is still planned to premiere on their streaming service this October.
